Probably a stupid question, but what does food actually do? (+trade)

I feel so silly, but IDS is all very straightforward, even the luxury and strategic goods guide themselves. But what about food dear sirs and madams? I've never seen it mentioned once in the game apart from tons of ways to get more of it - it must serve some purpose smiley: stickouttongue

Since I'm at it, my systems have no trade lines, do I need to build something, or are there any other prerequisites I must meet? My heroes get all these options to get more cookies out of trade, but I have none!

Much obliged smiley: smile

with more food you get more people, more people means more FIDS and so on... when your planets are filled with people you dont need more surplus only need to maintain what they need. There is a tech very late in the techtree where you can convert food to industry but this is to late to have any use in my eyes

Food increases your population growth rate. The higher number you have, the faster your system will gain population. The higher population, the better bonuses you get off of planetary exploits and so on.

Trade is tricky. Only your home system will have trade routes initially, other ones will require you to build certain system enhancements to open trade lines. They remain empty, though, until you make first contact with another race. And, maybe, you have to actually find some of their systems as well, for trade to kick in.
