Hi all,

Noob here. In fact, ES is the first 4x game I've ever played in which I've been interested enough in it to go to the forums and try to learn how to play it well. For whatever reason, I never really took all that well to Civ and the like. smiley: smile

I'm trying to figure out if I'm putting too much value on spheres of influence.

I know spheres of influence start building after a colony's 30th turn-birthday. However, I have a couple of questions about them:

1.) What, if anything, affects the size of a sphere aside from population? Does the level of a planet's development affect the system? (I've been building everything in a system right now in an attempt to grow them.)

2.) What are the consequences/benefits of the spheres? If I have two adjacent systems that I own and they have one route between them, and they have spheres that don't touch each other, does it matter?

Thanks!

1. Population, happiness, and buildings such as cis-oort satellites (in the west tree).

2. A region of influence prevents anybody from colonizing there, and prevents anybody from moving there with two exceptions:

a. Players who have open borders agreements

b. Ships which are exploring a system for the first time (otherwise you could never visit an enemy homeworld)

Besides by having an "open borders" agreement you can move into other player's region of influence if you are at war with that player.
