I see many of the battle cards note blocking numbers (+10% block, -20, etc)

How does block work compared to normal defenses?

AFAIK it is just an additional bonus you get if you succesfully counter ("block") the oponent's card. So if it says "+25% Deflection (+10% block)", it means +35% Deflection on succesfull counter. I agree that the meaning is not intuitive at all.

More discussion about this here and here.

Embair is correct. "Block" is the bonus you get for correctly countering an opponent's card. Note that on some cards, like Camouflage, the block bonus negates a penalty; Camouflage's -20% kinetic damage is nullified by the +20% Block bonus.

I'm pretty sure that blocking successfully ALSO prevents the opponent's card from having any effect whatsoever. I know that every time the enemy tries to repair and I block it, the enemy ships don't get any hp back at all.

So basically, if, say, you play an offensive card and I play the default defense card (which blocks all offense cards), not only do I get the bonuses listed after block, but your offense card actually does squat. In fights with fleets on nearly even terms, successfully blocking is HUGE.

I think all the gameplay descriptions need updating. When it says things like '+10 food on empire' etc it should say something like 'Empire gets +10 food'. Its all very unintuitive and the only lousy thing in an otherwise almost flawless GUI IMO. And I still dont really understand what the tactics card are getting at. I thought the first statement on each was a bonus if it wasnt blocked and the second was a negative if the card was blocked. But I am just not sure at all - its so badly worded.

As far as I can tell, both the bonuses and the negatives apply if you successfully play your card. If you block the other guy, you get the extra bonuses. If they block you, however, neither the bonuses nor the negatives apply. This is sort of amusing in cases where the card reduces your damage or defenses and you therefore perform better in that aspect when you're blocked. (The trade-off is not worth it, however, I'd argue, between the block bonus on the other card and the fact that you didn't get the bonus you wanted.)

"+10 food on empire" is actually correct. It means that ALL systems get +10 food, it's not "10 food distributed evenly between all systems" (e.g. an empire of 10 systems gets +1 food on each system for a total of +10).

It's the same as "+10 food on system" or "+10 food on planet" in terms of structure (admittedly both of those are equivalent smiley: wink ).
