What do I have to do to claim a diplomatic victory?

Hello Endless Spacers,

I have been enjoying getting in to this game over the past few days and I am beginning to get the hang of it. However something has stumped me. In my current game I am in an alliance with 4 races (3 others have been elliminated by me and the help of the alliance), I have 100% on the diplomatic victory and yet the game carries on as if it does not matter. Is there something else I have to do to qualify for this victory condition? A building? All races at very happy ? The alliance is still together although some races are unhappy. I am not sure if I am missing something or if the computer is cheating me out of a win.

Look forward to reading the replies.

You have to have the diplomatic victory ticked before you start the game.

Could always be a glitch however, but I bet you just didn't tick the victory condition before playing the game. I've done this before now.

Hello InFlamesWeTrust,

By default all victory conditions were checked. I managed to get my diplomatic victory but I had to save and quit the game completely before coming back to it for it to realise I had won! So a little glitch there. The game actually went on for about 155 turns which is weird as I had selected fast and the manual says you have 150 turns! A little bit of an inconveinence but I still like playing the game even if I have to deal with the bugs some times.

I was just curious chelonaut, what difficulty were you on and hope many active deals did you have going during your game, also if you could give a little info on how building your alliance worked, like did you invite each player and did you have cooperation agreements going and so on and so forth, any information would be appreciated.

I have been trying hard for a diplomatic victory and somehow keep getting beat by an AI.

Hello NewHorizon,

Please excuse the latest of my reply, I have not been back to these forums up until today.

In that game I was playing as the Ameoba. The difficulty was normal with 8 players on a small map. With the exception of the empire and the cravers I was at peace with everyone (and allied to) for most of the game. I formed the alliance early and managed to get the horatio and two sophons to ally together by giving them some resources and tech. Once the alliance was formed we ended up killing the cravers quite early on then went on to tackle the Hissho but ended up stopping that and i got them to come in to the alliance too. The alliance stayed all the way up till i finally one a diplomatic victory. I barely had to maintain the races opinion to me throughout. Maybe being at war together helped.

So full co-op agreements then alliance and we became VERY powerful on the galactic scene!

Regards

Hi Chelonaut,

I've just reached 100% in my diplo-victory bar, too. But just like for you, the game didn't recognised my victory - it just kept going as normal with the bar at 100%. I saved and re-loaded, and presto, it worked. I think this is a bug.

New Horizon, my game was a lot like Chelonauts - 8 races (mine was a large size galaxy), I was Amoeba, and 184 turns to win on Serious, which is actually faster than my first (and so far only) other victory, a military vic on a normal sized galaxy on Normal. I colonized fast, taking a critical system in the hub of the galaxy ASAP, followed by another two. I tried to keep my nearby neighbours penned into their arms of the galaxy. I allied with a nearby alien race (United Empire) with whom I had no borders - this is important. MAKE THE ALLIANCE BEFORE YOU BORDER EACH OTHER. Distant races will be happier in alliance with you because you aren't checking their expansion. The UE loved me throughout because my other ally (blue sowers) had a system between me and them. The blue sowers didn't like me as much, so I had to drip feed them tech or resources. The yellow sowers, who I had penned into their arm of the galaxy, never forgave me - despite never going to war they didn't agree to an alliance in 100 turns of trying to forge one - be careful about this if you go for diplo victory. The hissho were more warlike, and I had to fight them once or twice (small border scuffles - cold war stuff), but eventually got them into an alliance which lasted more than 40 turns til the end - again this cost me a lot of resources and tech to keep them sweet (I fed them more steadily than the blues to ensure this). Note that the Hissho had room to expand and were preoccupied with warring the very weak pink cravers for a while - I think this conflict might have made the more amenable to peace. I took one of the pink's systems and gifted it to the Hissho.

The other two races were some very aggressive Horatio, who declared war on me and everyone around them early, just after the start of my first alliance (I wiped them out and took their worlds); and secondly the orange cravers. They declared war during the Horatio war, but I took a few systems off of them to pen them into their arm of the galaxy. Then I made peace so I could concetrate on the Horatio. They accepted, and were clearly too afraid of my alliance to try again before the end of the game.

To summarise - I won some early victories, became the tech and resource leader, and then used my power and influence to buy people to my side. BUT the earlier I made alliances the stronger the bonds, and bordering on allies and potential allies hurt my cause.

Hello Smokey,

I too made an early rush for the centre planets of a spiral galaxy. This, just like in your game, allowed me to check the expansion of the other races to some degree. Having this 'hub' early allowed me to quickly make contact with all the civs. So the alliances were made as early as they would accept them, with the help of some tech gifting of course. Having that extra time in the early game for relations to improve definitely helped in creating a stable super alliance. With most of my borders protected by my allies I was then free to kill off the empire. They started real close to me and the only had one way out of their starting area and that was through my hub, inevitably diplomatic relations broke down as I was unwilling to give them the techs to maintain peace (mainly military techs). There was one other race (the Pilgrims) that I never managed to get in to the alliance but they had only 3 systems and once again were hemmed in by my hub. I left them alone and they never bothered me but I think the ever expanding influence of my systems annoyed them sufficiently to prevent any greater relations.

I'd like to know if anyone else has had the same problem with obtaining a diplomatic victory. I expected to wait a turn after hitting 100% but the victory never happened. If this has not been mention yet I should make a post on the bug/glitch area of these forums regarding the matter.

So to summarize:

  • Early contact with other civs (helped greatly by the amoeba racial)
  • Making Applied Casmir Effect a priority
  • Establishing yourself in the centre of the galaxy, seems to work very well on spiral maps (great ability to become the gate keeper and check civs expansion),
  • Consider making a Science Super System to get a tech lead against some other civs so you have something to offer in exchange for peace/cooperation/alliance
  • Plan B - Try to grab luxuries and resources (just be careful what resources you hand out to who!)

Thats what I have gleamed from my first diplomatic victory. I will be trying to refine the path to victory over successive games. I'll probably stay as Amoeba because they seem to have the most synergy with this type of play style.

This is a known bug I saw described someplace else. Basically, after you've run the game for a while, it just stops checking for diplomatic victory, even if you've reached 100%. If you're playing SP, just save, quit to desktop, then reload the save and wait.

The devs are aware of the issue.
