Invasion won't progress.

I just started playing and have a lot of doubts. Mainly, I tried to invade a colony (not an outpost) and the invasion progress bar would not progress. I exited the game, came back and it still remained the same after several turns. I am at war with this empire. Could I be doing something wrong?

Also, I am playing as the Sophons, and there are NO diplomatic options. Only Declare War is available. Is this normal? If so it seems a bit poor.

Simply put you dont have enough invasion strength to overcome the system's defense. Invasion strength is a combination of combined weapons and invasion modules. The best way to do this is to either have more ships taking part in the invasion or build ships with invasion modules. I myself prefer to just have more regular ships as maintaince cost is based on the CP of the ship.

You've not researched the techs that allow for diplomacy yet. They're in the left-hand tree. Look for icons with little silver triangles in them, if I recall correctly.

Yeah till you get the techs all that can exist is cold war which isnt a bad thing early as you can invade other empires outposts.
