You are definitely missing a Strategic Resource. Technology often outpaces the acquisition of Strategic Resources... If you go to your Ship Screen, look at the model of ship you are trying to retrofit. Within the listing, is the Strategic Resources required for the retrofit.

If you are missing one of these resources, there are only 2 solutions:

1. Remove the Module that requires the resource you are missing

2. Colonize a planet that contains the resource you need

--> There is also the possiblity that you have not even researched the advancement needed to "see" the Strategic Resource you need.

This is possible because you can research up the tech tree, and skip over the applied sciences technologies necessary to gain Strategic Resources...

I see the problem. You can only retrofit ships whose design you've modified. If you created an entirely different ship using the same hull size, you cannot change one ship into the other.

For example, you're trying to change a DD MKII into an Implacable. That's not possible. You'd need to go to the DD MKII design, hit modify, make the changes there, and save your new DD MKII 2. Then you can upgrade your DD MKII to THAT.

Haha, good that you got to the bottom of it. It's for this same reason that I avoid building many low level hull designs for offensive ship types (colony/scouts are fine), since you can readily reach the mid-sized ships on the lower tech tree very early on.
