Tried to search for it, but I couldn't find it.

There's a Star System Improvement called "Hardened Framing" and it gives + 6 Ship XP on building in star system.



What does that mean exactly? Does ships have XP points?

your ships have levels of experience too, basically the improvement promotes all ships built at that location to level 2 or so edit: (at that location only).



this provides them a slight boost in firepower and defense, and is cumulative with other such improvements at that location.

You don't really (to my knowledge) - but they have army style ranking insignia on them letting you know what level they are. You know the ^ ones.

As a note, at most levels of xp you only get a hp bonus. Only on the absolute highest levels of xp (which I have never seen myself) do you get combat bonuses. The wiki has the detailed numbers.
