I finally got around to giving a serious go at Endless Space and one really frustrating thing that I've spotted is that, on occassion, an enemy (AI) fleet will move during my (player) turn. There seems to be an element of real-time play that I wasn't expecting in a turn-based game where quickly relocating to the system in question to hit the engage enemy fleet button is important or where moving a fleet to system X immediately prompts an enemy fleet to flee to system Y can be the difference between killing an enemy fleet and leaving it get away.

Is this working as intended, a bug or what's the story?

I think it was intended. I once chased a enemy scout for several turns; every time my ship came close, the damn thing fled. but I find it an interesting aspect to the game.

Yeah, I've been looking around and it appears that Endless Space is not strictly turn-based. I don't mind that (though I would prefer a more traditional take on it) but a head's up somewhere would have been nice.

Please read the sticky welcome thread in the tech support forum, linked in my sig below. ES is a simultaneous player game. There is no such thing as "your" turn; everyone moves during the same turn. To catch a scout, you have to put a ship into the destination system, using the "intercept" action.

guess i missed this:

TAKE ON THE UNIVERSE

  • Play against up to seven opponents and build up - or break - alliances at will.
  • Discover an innovative and dynamic simultaneous turn-based gameplay.
  • Permit instant jump-in for your ongoing online games.
  • Define your own custom civilizations and confront the ones created by your friends

But that isn't strictly true either. Most enemy movements happen during the 'turn processing' phase, it's just the odd couple that seem to occur during your turn almost as if there are spare movement points left over for the AI units that it gets to use whereas the opposite isn't the case for the player. In other words, you don't get to move when the AI is moving - in fact, you can't do anything. Also, I most certainly would not have thought to look for the answer to this question in the Tech Support forum.

Thanks for the clarification though.

It is a little annoying, but easily countered once you get used to it. Blockading with your fleets is the key. Be very careful when rearranging fleets, the blockade can be turned off, and suddenly the AI is zipping past you into your undefended areas.

If you have combined two fleets in a contested outpost (that you own), you can disband the smaller fleet into your hanger. Othewise the AI will pick off the smaller fleet. Make your that blockade is on.

You can do the same, essentially. What's happening, as I understand it, is that they didn't move those fleets during the turn, but they were queued to move somewhere. Like if you send a fleet on a trip that will take a few turns--at the end of the next turn, if you don't move it yourself, clicking "End Turn" moves them. I've always figured that is what the AI is doing.
