Greetings all,

what is the point of having more than 1 (or 4 for the bonus) of a strategic resource? I mean besides for trading.

In civ5 for instance, if I have 9 iron, I can only build 9 of say longsword men, and to build more, I would need more sources of iron, but in endless space;

1) if I have only 1 of a certain strategic resource that is used for a certain weapon module (say missile alpha) I can still add as many of said module into my ship design (say 10x missile alpha).

2) I can also build as many ships containing the 10x missile modules as I please

3) I can also use the same resource for a support module, and repeat the same 2 points above, in fact I can design a ship that uses both the weapon and support module that requires the same resource, and build as many ships as I want of this design.

Any clarification would be great, thanks.

If you get a monopoly of strategic resources, the cost of any modules or ships that require that resource gets discounted. I'm not sure by how much, though.

there are passive effects to each resource, like say +1% industry per Titanium-70 or something like that. So if you have 9 Titanium-70, it's +9%, in addition to whatever bonuses you get for having 4 or more.

Their bonus to the hosting planet is a useful addition for any system, but denying them from your opponents is always a good benefit.

With only one resource, you would get a 10% discount on modules using that resource (assuming it's a strategic resource, not a luxury one).

With two, you would get a 20% discount.

With three, a 30% discount.

Finally, four or more (a monopoly) gets you a 60% discount which in my opinion is quite worth it.

Luxury resources are quite different, so you can just go to the Endless Space wiki page for them where there is a graph near the bottom showing each resource and how it's numbers affect its bonuses: http://endlessspace.wikia.com/wiki/Luxury_resources

Oh that clears it up nicely thanks, but one more question, if titanium-70 gives +1 production per pop on a planet, if the planet has 3 titanium, is it +3 production per pop on the planet?

Indeed, but I do believe they are population tied.

I feel that this is a good thing at preventing such words from becoming too powerful from having them.

They are a bonus per population on that planet (like base planet yields and anomalies), yes. Per population and per deposit size would be too much--otherwise a UE rich Quadrinix deposit could reach +12 Industry and Science per population! Though I suppose at max tech luxuries can reach up to +16 total FIDS per population already, which is also pretty high.
