Well said, it's easy to learn for beginners, takes some time to learn, but is worth the fun you will have! smiley: wink

There is a manual, its mostly the same as the tutorial though, with some extra info.

I highly advocate Endless Space as your first! The UI really goes a long way in making it an accessible game! It's also crisp, clean, and new!

If you're into retrogaming, Master of Orion 1+2 and Alpha Centauri (Both are on GoG) are ones that I highly recommend picking up too-- once you have a better grasp and have decided if 4x gaming is for you! Orion 2 especially, I feel like it's the yardstick for the genre!

Thanks for your suggestions, also. When you say that Endless Space is not in real time, this means that even the battles does not happens in real time?

Also, I was thinking in to start in the 4X genre through Sword of the Stars II. I'm happy I found Endless Space and this community. I just found strange (sorry my ignorance, here) a game with so many openness and large universe be contained in around 2GB! smiley: smile

The battles play out in real time, but they're not *actually* in real time. The way it works is, the battle is played out automatically, with your ships moving towards the enemy ships and firing. There are three phases of combat, and you can choose a card for each phase, with the cards applying abilities or effects (some will heal your ship and lower your damage, and some will increase your damage but lower your defense). So, you ca choose the three cards at the beginning of the battle, and it won't take any further input.

Hi,

I purchased Endless Space, and always wanted to play a 4X Game. I loved the informations about the game, screenshots, videos, etc.

But, I have never played a title from this genre, and one of the reasons of my interest in Endless Space, also, is the fact it is the first one. The first in a franchise, let's say.

So, in your opinions, is Endless Space appropriate for a total newbie in 4X games? I have already played strategy games (RTS and turn-based) but no 4X.

Thanks in advance for any help. smiley: smile

Trolls aside, in Endless Space the information is generally easy to find, with tooltips and such. I highly suggest you play your first game until the end, without worrying about errors made. It's the best way to learn how to play, and puts into perspective the early techs, improvements, etc. Once you get a mega-system, with all improvements, terraformed fully-populated planets, you know a little better what to aim for.

Andarilho, I think this is a good game to have a first experience in 4X games. It is so, because the game is very organized, intuitive, cool and it is not over-cluttered as some other games.

In the beginning you may have some trouble adapting to this game's style, but you will surelly learn how to play and will soon understand the basics. However, the tutorial is not as easy as you might expect, because it is only a bunch of texts (which are understandable) spreaded across the screen, without any speech or so.

This 4X game seems a lot more open for new players than other games in the genre, like Sins of a Solar Empire. it's also much easier to manage this game as opposed to SoaSE, considering how often there seems to be just too much stuff going on in Sins for you to figure it all out and react to it all (at least when you're starting out). Endless Space is turn based, and there's also only so much stuff that can be going on. Basically: Like others said, easy to learn, difficult to master.

Although if you enjoy the game and want to try a real-time 4X game I definitely recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. You can get Trinity on Steam now, and it's much more difficult to learn, but once you have it all figured out you can start working on improving yourself.

4) Fortunately they have remove 3/4s of the micromanagement that plagues games like this,

1. A smallish chunk of the modding community is working on fixing each of those problems (separately, not for one big mod)

2. You're making the generalization that all players are as good as you. I'm not that good and I do have trouble doing well in this game.

To Andarilho, this is my first 4X game and I'd say it was pretty easy to learn the basics, but it's going to take a long time to master.

Well, it is hard to learn and has a steep learning curve. On the other hand, most things can be handled by looking at mouseovers and asking people (who generally even answer nicely).

You'll need endurance and a few tips, but it is manageable.

So first tip by me: Go to the empire screen (most upper left symbol usable on galaxy screen) and slide the tax slider down, until your empire is happy.

This advances your food/industry/science production, while hampering your dust income, but it pays off especially in the beginning, since your population grows a lot faster.

I would say yes, endless space seems to be fairly intuitive in is working and is easy to learn.

And of course, hard to master. smiley: wink
