Does the AI know I am about to win?

I'm really struggling to get my first win in this game, but each time I've gotten closer and closer--hopefully coming soon! What I've noticed, though, particularly on my attempts at a wonder victory, my nearby (and sometimes long-term) allies suddenly become "suspicious" of me every turn, and then I have to appease them through gifts to prevent a war when I'm so close to finishing my wonder structures. That implies to me that they know I am close to winning, but how? Would I know if the AI had, say, 4/5 wonder structures built?

Note: I do know that at some point I am able to see the AI's progress toward economic, diplomatic, expansion victories, so I guess this only applies to wonder victories.

Maybe your oponents don't know that you're winning, but they know you are powerfull, and therefore they start to dislike you.

One way to avoid this is to be stronger than all of your oponents togheter, so they will fear you and won't disturb you.

When a player reaches a certain level of accomplishment in a victory condition, that is shown in the infotext when you mouse-over the menus in the upper left corner. The only way to prevent someone to see how many wonders you built is to built them all at once.

There is a point system, which makes the A.I. aware of what you are doing. If you are harming the victory of the A.I. in any way you collect "negative" points (how much points you collect depends on how bad it is for the A.I. :P!). If you reach certain limits, it is going to declare war & try to stop you.

You can check under the dimplomacy tab exactly what is making your allies hate you. In my case it's almost always that our borders are touching and I'm preventing their expansion.

Thanks to everyone, I didn't know much of these things, but particularly:

In any event, I was 6 turns from a wonder victory, but I came in last (4th) overall and in many categories--so it couldn't have been that I was too powerful (yeah, I am still learning--this was on easy). In any event, I will definitely be checking why they don't like me in the future.

No, the AI isn't programmed to understand that you are about to win. It only understands score - it will resent you if you are ahead in score. The reason your allies are turning on you is most likely that there are very few empires left and so you are one of the only remainding competitors. Just like in Civiliation there is no such thing as real friendship in this game - only a temporary truce while more problematic opponents are being dealt with.

When building wonders the A.I. knows you are winning. I tried it several times to build them one after the other and the A.I. went to war. Therefore I build them all in 1-2 rounds so that the A.I. can not respond to my action.

That's not quite accurate. Each race has its very own understanding of what they consider bad or good.

Some of them will dislike you for being strong, others will dislike you for being weak.

This kind of information can be found in Personality.xml.

Pilgrims, Sophon and Amoeba have completely different standards when it comes to judging you and their willingness to go to war than Hissho, Craver or United Empire.

Interesting. These were Sophons, as the Hissho were for some reason completely impotent in this particular game (and I didn't interact enough with the Sowers to get a feel on them). However, I was in last place in score, which is why I asked the question to begin with. Since the Sophons not only won (science victory), but also had the highest score, highest diplomacy, and highest economic score, I wasn't sure why they'd feel threatened. Had it been the war-like Hissho, I might have understood it.

Hovering over their Relation-status in the Info-Screen will give you a detailed list about all of the factors that effect their retlationship to you.

The point was the player will be universally disliked or at least receive a diplo penalty for being ahead in score - it won't necessarily entail a declaration of war, but you don't get cookie points with anyone for beating them.
