Missing something with fleets

Hi guys,

This is my first play through the game and so far I love it ! I feel just a little bit disappointed by the fights, but I also know you are thinking about an expansion to get more fun out of the battles. For the rest, it's very good.

I have though run into a problem, which I don't understand. I'm probably missing something here, so I ask, as I couldn't find any solution.

Everything was ok until a few turns ago... I had small battles, and was upgrading my ships and fleets accordingly. I was losing some and winning some. From the start I was trying to mix a little bit the ships (like paladins, cruisers,...) I wanted to continue expanding my fleets that way but I'm now stuck on a problem. I can't create fleets with what I want.

Let's imagine I want 2 Paladins, 2 Cruisers and 2 Heavy Destroyers, I just can't do that. Or a fleet of 5 Cruisers, I can't.

Since my fights were on par with the others, I wasn't asking me to much questions.

A few turns ago, a pirate came from nowhere (didn't saw him coming and entered by a dead end of my empire). When I looked at its stats, it was down crazy. Its fleet of 4 ships was making more than 4000 power. My strongest fleet (2 Light Destroyers, and I can't add more) is dealing 800 power. The time for me to gather my fleets, I wanted of course to make sure I could at least fight him. The idea was to get all I had in stock in one fleet. And there I was blocked. Unabled to get more than 2 or 3 ships, the maximum damage of each fleet I had was 800 power. I had 6 fleets, of between 800 and 700 power... Mathematically it could be competitive for the defense. THe time to do that, and I already lose a barely colonised world. The pirates attacks the next system. I have all my ships from my empire waiting on that system. And since I can't form a large fleet, I select all my fleets and ask to attack the pirates.

Surprise ! The attack occurs one fleet at a time : 800 vs 4000... Pirates rape my first fleet and I do them 38 damage while they almost one shot my ships. All my fleets go down. So basically, I think I can say goodbye to my empire, with just those 4 ships. The fact that each fleet attacked individually made a huge difference as attacking altogether.

My problem is not the power. Is the fact I can't stack them together.

What am I missing ? How can I tell how much I can stack in one fleet ? What's the limit ?

Thanks for any suggestions, I'm a little bit lost in here

There's a Command Point Limit for fleets. On the bottom left when you have a fleet selected, it has two important numbers: The movement points (If my memory serves me right, it's the one at the end of the line; it will say 4/4, 7/7, etc). The other one looks similar, but it will be out of 5. 5 is the starting CP limit (except for Cravers, who get 2 extra CP).

Each ship has a certain CP value. The first three ship designs cost only one CP. The next two cost 2 CP each and the final ship design costs 4.

You can upgrade the CP limit through certain techs in the west (left) tech tree. Also, when you have your fleets selected, you can drag and drop individual ships between fleets.

Also make sure you keep designing and upgrading your ship designs in the Military tab at the top, otherwise you'll have a lot of trouble doing damage to enemies if you fall behind.

Great ! Thanks for your answer !

Yes indeed that's what I was searching for. I had spotted the movement number, and was focusing on that one. I didn't noticed the CP thing... I did know that I could move ships between fleets, but I was blocked and couldn't do as I wished. It was linked with that CP...

So I guess this game is screwed up lol... All my ships are upgraded to the latest tech, and I'm way behind the pirates. I mostly searched the down tree... I almost have no research point at all in the left one... Awwww... At least I've learned why I failed, and it's important to get better !

Thanks for your clear and kind answer !

Did you update the designs? Like I said before, you have to use the Military Tab (selected from the top) and edit the ship designs to use new weapons/modules that you've researched. A lot of new players seem to be unaware of that fact.

And after you upgrade them, you also have to build the new ships to make use of the upgrades (or update existing ships).

Sorry if you already knew this, just saying it just in case.

Thanks... Yes indeed they are upgraded. I'm SOTS and Distant Worlds player, so that's one of the first thing I searched (and found). I think I just put to much efforts on the down tree and very less elsewhere, making my tech very very very low against my opponent... But thanks for telling !

The northern tree will have all the new weapon/defense techs, and you need those new modules if you want to stay competitive.

You also shouldn't push yourself too much in any one tree; all four trees are crucial to the game, and you can't just ignore one or the other.

Thanks for the informations. For me, it's not how to win that I wanted to know, but why I was failing... Now it's much clearer :-) Furthermore, I'm not dead yet in my game. Still surviving, and trying to catch back as I can :-) It's fun smiley: stickouttongue Thanks for all that have answered !

Yep I found the option by accident smiley: biggrin

Btw: ctrl + Left-Klick allows you to selecet multiple Fleets and send them together to their destination! (Just in case you don't know that yet)
