If I invade a system and another AI later invades that system, how is the winner decided? Same on the flip side, can I out-invade a system my ally is invading (single player) - it may seem silly but that was a particularly important system.

The winner will actually finish the invasion before the other player and then get the system. There is no diplomatic way to ask "leave me this system, please" at the moment; It could be an improvement though!

The winner is decided by who starts the invasion first. Simple reason: Noone else can invade a system that is already being invaded. So, of course, you can't out-invade a system.

There is a "diplomatic" way! Declare war on them, make their ships "leave" and continue the invasion where they have left off! ^^

I meant a "nice and polite" way. But yeah.

Thanks Ali, after I saw my future enemy (aka Ally) invate a nearby rich system, I sent a BIG fleet there and thought I invaded it as well. Turns out, I was "defending" it (how nice of me to help his puny fleet). Based on your post and this observation, I quickly sent small fleets to lock down other systems before my "ally" could get there first.
