I'm trying to attack a species and cannot goto their solar system, the only places I can go are my own and to my ally's. This is about mid-game and I have the tech to go anywhere even without following paths so what's the problem?

you have to declare war to the faction before you can enter their influence region.

Thanks, it worked though I've never had the problem before, I've always been able to enter their territory because we're at a cold war or neutral and all attempts of peace I've denied.I didn't want to openly go to war yet but oh well. Curious though, why can I just now not enter their region freely?

You should only be able to enter their territory if:

-The star system is undiscovered (once you leave, you can only enter it when one of the 2 requirements is met).

-you have the "open borders" agreement.

-You're at war.

Outposts don't generate the influence circle that's considered an empire territory. If an outpost is too far from other full colonies, they're fair game in cold war, you can blockade and invade those all you want. Except once you finish the invasion, that empire (AI) will probably hate you.

You should be able to enter enemy territory if the system you go to is under your control (you have colonized or invaded it). Cold war is fun!

Most often than not you "find" your enemies by simply stumbling into their territory. Now that you know they're there you can enter their territory under conditions mentioned above.
