Question: How do i upgrade a ship

I know this is probably a simple question but i have been playing for about 2 days now and i cannot upgrade ships

i can make a custom ship, but for some reason i cannot figure out how to make a new design based on an old one so i can overhaul old ships into the new design

if somebody can give me a step by step or a link or something that would be awesome

To upgrade a ship disign, simply click it and make changes.

To make a ship upgrade to the newer version, lets say:

Ship 2 -> Ship 3

In the same window:

Click the fleet where the ship(s) are/is in and hit the "retrofit" button. This cost dust.

do they need to be in the hanger or can they still be in the fleet? and does the ship have to have any kind of resemblance to the previous or just the same hull type?

The hull will be the same, but If you've removed for example all kinetic rounds and replaced them with beam weapons the hull is where the similarities end.

The ships need to be in orbit of a controlled system in order to retrofit.

ok, i played around with it some more last night and figured out what i was doing wrong. i had been starting a new ship when designing a upgrade instead of modifying the old design. once i did that i was able to upgrade my ships.
