Any way to see why I'm about to lose?

Finally finished a full game -- love it, loved almost everything about it. I was behind in score the whole time to the Pilgrims, but I couldn't figure out why. I was turns away from winning a scientific victory when a window popped up and said "you lose, Pilgrims got a Wonder victory."

Is there any way I could have known that was coming ahead of time, other than seeing that I was behind in score but not realizing why?

Thanks for any info.

I'd love to hear an answer to that as well.

Just lost a game 7 turns away from a Sci victory when the AI Automatons (whom I was also playing as my faction) suddenly won a Wonder victory out of the blue.

Is there any sort of "Victory Status" page showing all the victory conditions in one place with progress towards them? Even if it didn't show the name of the enemy player who is approaching victory, just seeing that someone is close to a victory and which type would be useful. Could rationalize as being gossip and rumors spread along the trade routes or some such.

No, it isn't. I suggest that you switch the wonder victory off. It's almost the fastest victory and easy to reach for the AI.

The information on who is ahead on victory conditions, and who is about to win, is already available in game. It may not be very obvious, and it doesn't solve all your problems, but it is very useful. Please load a late game save and hover the mouse over the various panel control buttons at the upper left, like the empire panel, diplomatic panel, fleet panel buttons. Probably you will notice a hover help window which shows the percent-complete of the victory conditions. There are some conditions in the game to only show this information when a player is "close", so it may not show anything in the early game. If you poll these hover helps occasionally, you can see your own progress and hopefully observe if another player is close.

Well, that's definitely better than nothing, thanks for the tip. I'd suggest they find a way to put this information somewhere other than a hover-help.

The definitions of the victory conditions are not exactly hidden, but in an unexpected place. Go into the new game - advanced options panel on the right. There, you will find checkboxes to turn off each of the conditions. The hover help gives the definition of the condition.
