detailed Tech tree?

Hello,

I'm a new player to ES - and liking it so far. Well liking it barring Research (it will get better over time but for a new player it's like doing random guesswork on what you are researching) and Random events (very uncreative from what I can tell so far). But both issues have been discussed a few times in the forum - so not going to complain here and now. ;-)

Actually I do have 2 questions at this time:

1) Steam delivered the German edition to me without me being asked if that's what I want. Is there any way I can get that "transformed" to the english version?

(note: just a few months ago I was "cheated" into having to use Steam (because of SoASE), so ES is just my 2nd game there - and I may simply not be used to it enough to know how and where I could change that). In the end this would be just nice to have, as I'd prefer the English version over the (sometimes) rather badly translated german one.

2) The more important issue for me and I swear I looked very hard for it, used the search function and went through all the pages in different parts of this forum: but is there anywhere a detailed overview of the research tree - including what exactly I get for each tech (buildings, weaps, improvements - esp. incl. details about those things). Found something similiar for the Hero skills -and that's really great, but found nothing for research :-(

thanks a million!

For the first question, I've honestly no answer, so you'd have to wait for Steph'nie.

For the second, you can zoom in which will show a (slightly) more detailed research tree, it will have a picture as well as a "tab" that will show what you will receive from researching it. The <--- tree mainly has passive bonuses (to fleet capacity), diplomacy options or improvements for food and happiness . --> has ship bonuses, mineral resources and industry and science. (Mind you, I'm only saying this to clarify what each tree focuses on) the bottom tree has travel (through wormholes, increased passive fleet speed) and colonization/terraforming options as well as new ship hulls/sizes. The top is just defenses and weapons for ships.

Overall: zoom in and mouse over the pictures beside each research option for an idea, or you can check out the endless space wiki: http://endlessspace.wikia.com/wiki/Endless_Space_Wiki, and read them more in detail (lotta text, warning)

Edit: Sorry Steph smiley: stickouttongue if I had taken less time you would have noticed, but I did warn of your arrival smiley: smile

Hi and welcome! smiley: smile

1. To change the language: right click on the game in your Steam library, Properties, Languages, and simply choose English.

2. You'll find that you can zoom in the research tree, and hover over the techs to read the tooltips. Note that these techs are usually attached to a colours: pink for approval (which will make your population happier), blue for science (to research faster), green for food (food is nice to have if you want to make your population grow faster), etc. You might also have noticed that the tree is divided in four parts:

  • Left = diplomacy and trade
  • Bottom = expansion and exploration
  • Right = science
  • Top = military

Once you know where to look approximately, it will become easier! And, of course, you can check the community wiki for more info. smiley: approval

Thanks for the replies and the advices.

Will see if I missed any ingame information, but for instance I was trying to identify the next tech that gives me the next 22% disapproval reduction, but in the end had to resort to research every tech in the bottom tree til I finally found it. (that's also a reason why I'd like to have the english version - to be able to use Wiki infromation to search for the tech).

But in the end it's just a question of getting used to the techs.

What I'm really impressed with is how quickly the AI adjusts to the ships I'm using. Once I introduced Lasers I blew its fleets away, quickly after it pumped out ships with lots of Shields. Nice one.

The only thing I don't understand is why the AI doesn't colonize the centre at all. Read some guides here which tell not to colonize the middle agressively...so I went in, and only colonized 3 systems there (end of my wormhole, end of a wormhole with only 1 faction behind plus a system inbetween). I started colonizing there at
From reading the forum I got the impression that "hard" difficulty would be quite a step up from "normal", so I'm rather disappointed that the AI isn't really putting up a serious fight. Ah well, I got 1 "real" AI-friends, which I'm feeding techs and Dust - hopefully it gets strong and puts up a real fight at the end ;-)

But the best about the game so far is that it didn't happen for a long, long, long time anymore that I played a game, looked at the watch "WTH?!?!?! 2am already?!?!....I need to get up at 6 again!!!". After the first shock I know that I'm playing a game I like ;-)

Yes, time flies by REALLY quickly with this game haha. For the -22% disapproval, usually you look at the swirly techs, they usually have bonus to speed and allows for wormhole and pathless flying. Meaning, realistically, if you can reach your planets faster and easier, your people won't be as mad that you colonized so far away, which will increase time of trade and other goodies. (In short, faster travel = less time. Less time = happier people smiley: smile )

For the AI not colonizing the center, two things could have happened. 1. Unless you're at war, the AI can't travel through the wormhole if it ends up on one of your systems (only a problem if it's a colony, not an outpost.) and 2. Which is affected similarly as 1, your systems influence area (the circle around your system) covered the neutral system. As with #1, unless they are at war, they cannot colonize or even go inside the area of influence.

Neither is the case.

The center has 6 Wormholes going away from it and behind those wormholes 6-7 systems.

2 of those wormholes are splitting to 2 factions each.

I came out at the one right at the north - and blocked "my" wormhole and the wormhole right to me with colonies. The faction to that second wormhole eventually declared war at me (which came in handy as it matched my plans). With 4 of the other 6 factions I'm at peace, 2 at neutral (they will be next). I colonized another system that is connected with "standard lanes" from my 2 other center-systems and which interfers with no other wormholes.

All the rest of the center (4 wormholes + 4-5 other systems) were completely untouched by me for the last 50 turns. Just now the influence of one of my systems there has overtaken 1 other system, but still there are 5 (iirc) untaken systems there. With wonders, ressources, nice planets and everything. Really strange. AIs started colonizing the first end-of-wormhole systems at around turn 40-45 and just recently (60-70) started to colonize 2 of the systems in the middle.

Well, maybe I expected too much from the "hard" setting ;-)

Well the only real difference between AI is the bonus to FIDS. They don't get harder or easier per sae, but they more bonuses, putting them ahead of you. If you can, add a screenshot (or game save) so we can evaluate the situation smiley: smile

My issue with the tech tree is solved - i never went to the max zoom level. Everything i wanted to see is there now :-)

AIs eventually colonized all the systems in the middle - but at this point they were already hopelessly behind me in every regard. Ah well - good learning game for me ...

Thanks for the help :-)
