Upgrading existing ships

I am obviously a huge noob, I have played countess campaigns and I am still learning, that is why I love this game.

My question is, when I build my battle ship, and research a new ship upgrade (lets say better missiles), is there a way to upgrade the existing ships with the new upgrade?

It cost dust and you have to have your ship in your system.

Ok just made a ship (Called it Hammerhead), made a few, than upgraded the ship (Hammerhead 2). What do I do with the ships in the hangar to upgrade them from Hammerhead to Hammerhead 2?

Create a fleet, then go to the fleet management screen, select the fleet and click "retrofit". At the moment it's not possible to upgrade ships in the hangar.

i also advice to turn on the option to automatically upgrade ships designs in queues - its in option.

Now I haven't done it in a while, but is the exploit with upgrading ships fixed? Since I didn't use it but confirmed it ages ago I have never looked to see if it got fixed.

What exploit do you mean? I've started playing only recently and don't see any exploits.
