Can someone explain to me how diplomacy is supposed to work?

1. How do I check my progress for diplomacy victory?

2. Why is it that when I donate to someone, their donation score doesn't increase?

3. Why is it that the AI randomly cancels treaties despite a good relationship?

Some pointers would be appreciated. This 4X game feels like eXpand, eXterminate, eXterminate, eXterminate so far.

Diplo Progress is part of the Diplomacy panely on mouseover

Donations are capped to +50

AI is capricious and not worth making deals with unless you're traidng permanent effects (or effects the AI won't want to break)

I get that it caps at 50, but it's stuck at ~20 sometimes for me, and no matter what I give them, it won't increase. (I tested it with research and Dust.) Is there something I am missing?
