Fighter & Bombers in Ship to Ship Combat: worth it yet?

Heya. When Disharmony first came out, fighters and bombers were just not worth it in ship-to-ship combat. I haven't played in a bit. I saw they got a boost in a patch. I was wondering whether folks thought they were competative yet with other ship-to-ship type weapon systems? I tried searching the forums and couldn't find an answer on point.

The second tier and above of fighters and bombers that you research can change the outcome of a battle. (provided you have enough in your fleet)



Their tonnage is also no longer based on % so they are easier to put in ships.

How usefull is the second Tier bomber actually? I often read all but the first Tier of Strikecrafts are ok. But the "heavy Bombship" really does not seem to be particulary usefull unless the enemy has lots of Fighters and Point defence* also afair the "battle" Version takes up 2 Slots which doen't really help. Am I just reading the discription wrong or are you guys always facing lots of PD and fighers, because I sure don't. Unless fighting the Amoeba it's unlikely that the AI has more strikecraft than myself.



*The naming convention really bugs me, FLAK and PD are really messed up!
