My population is stuck. The growth rate is 0% for my home planet and there's still room to grow. My taxes are low, food is exploited, but I can't figure out what the issue is. Granted I'm a newb, I still want to learn how to maximize my growth on my planets ASAP.

by 0% growth you mean you have 0 food surplus? (the food icon on the top left has a 0 or negative value).

If it's positive your population will grow (if space is available). That is represented by the blue bar next to the pop value.

If it's not positive, factors could be your actual food generation or the general happiness which impacts the output of all FIDS (food/industry/research/dust).

Does building have anything to do with it? I noticed it went away after ships finished building. If that's the case, that's freakin retarded. Why would population have any barring on the production and manufacturing of ships? If anything, it creates jobs and makes people more happy.

Colony ships stop population growth while they are being constructed. If you are playing as harmony, this is true for war ships as well.

This was introduced with the expansion, it was one of several changes meant to curb mass expansion strategies that plagued the vanilla version (whether it was enough remains to be seen).

Logically, yeah it's kinda silly, but from a game mechanic standpoint it works well, and it's not and ES thing. Civ V has this exact same mechanic. Just think twice before you start building a colony ship, and don't start building a colony ship if you are going to repopulate the next turn.

Is there a way to tell from the system view screen how many turns until the system gains a pop?

Ya in your Empire screen:

I discovered the timer in the Empire screen, But it would be handy to see the number in the System view screen

you can see it in the system screen too. Its slightly left of the hero picture. Its the same little clock thing as in the empire screen.

Actually Colony ships could be said to be siphoning off growth to fill the ship itself. Though it's a bit of a stretch.

Related to OP's post, I think I found the same problem as he did?

Can anyone spot what's stopping this system from growing?

That's odd. Maybe the bad planet Anomalies are causing it. Try this: You should have definitely researched Adaptive Colonies and/or Soil Reunification.

If you go to your Empire window in the top right corner, you'll see a pair of scissors there. Click on that and that will trigger a new development to remove those Anomalies all your planets have. Anomalies are those Planet Effects like EM Radiation, Hostile Dust, and Meteor Strikes. Maybe that will help?

it looks like he's already removed the anomalies, EM radiation is grayed out.

There's no reason it shouldn't be growing, certainly a bug.

I know this is a couple of months old, but since googling the problem brings you here, this is probably the best place to put the solution (or at least A solution). It does appear to be a bug. I have a few ideas about what might be causing it, but the easiest solution seems to be to build something with a civilian support module so it halts construction and let it finish. Canceling it might work, too. I didn't test that. But once I let the system build a factory, it jogged the system into realizing it's pop growth wasn't -actually- being frozen by anything. Try that and see if it helps.

(I really hope people on this board aren't too irate with 2-month old topics being posted to... At least it's something helpful, right? lol)

"The current construction is freezing the growth of your system" is unnecessarily cryptic. The message should simply say "Population will not grow while building colony ships."
