Mac Version:Screen not updating

Hello,

I hadn't played Endless Space for a few months. I noticed it updating via Steam and decided to play a game, but post-update the game screen doesn't seem to be updating correctly. I've tried changing the resolution and switching to windowed mode, hoping things would re-set but the problem persists: only the bottom left corner of the game screen (maybe 20% of the screen area) shows the galaxy map as it should when playing the game. I can zoom in and out, but only the bottom left corner reacts. The rest of the screen seems frozen on whatever was visible before I went back into the game. If I was in the options screen, that's what shows (first screen shot below). If I switch to windowed mode it will switch to the correct (game) image on the whole screen, but that image will be frozen except for the bottom left corner (second screen shot below). In the second screen shot you can see where I've zoomed in then back (re-centering the image a bit) -- the bottom left corner is active but the rest of the screen is unchanged from before I started zooming.

I'm on a late 2012 27" iMac running OS 10.8.4 with a GeForce GTX 680MX video card. Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the help so far, Amplitude. I hadn't tried the game for a while - the graphical problems I'd been having plus the retreat bug made me lose interest for a while. I notice there's been an update since my last post which I'm told takes care of the retreat bug, so that's cool (thank you, well done). However I'm still having this problem with the screen not updating. Something seems to have changed, as I'm now only having the problem mentioned in the original post when I'm in fullscreen mode. When playing in a window the game seems to be working normally. Any idea how I can fix this so I can play in fullscreen mode? Thanks in advance.

Hello there,

Sorry for not answering to your previous post. Unfortunately your topic may have been buried by others too rapidly the first time...

However I'm glad to hear that even if it is not ideal yet the game situation has improved a bit at least in windowed mode.

We will have a look into the update of resolution and the issue which occurs if you change it!

Otherwise, in case you are not aware, it is possible to adjust the settings manually inside the document Registry.xml which is placed just before your save folder. You can get a direct access to the game folder by right clicking on Endless Space in your Steam Library, go to "View Downloadable Content", in "Local Files" there's a button to "Browse Local Files".

Cheers,

Thank you, I appreciate all the work that goes into a game like this, and I know it can't be easy trying to get everything running smoothly in every circumstance. Thanks also for the tip about changing the settings manually. Fortunately, even with the screen update bug I am not locked out of adjusting the settings from within the game. Hitting the escape button still brings up the options menu, which is unaffected by the bug (it only affects the 'game' graphics - the universe, ships, star links, etc).

I look forward to hearing more as you discover it. Thanks again.

I did find a thread that does not describe the issue you are having but it does suggest that there are timing issues with GeForce GTX 680MX video card and Unity. They are suggesting that it is Apple/Nvidia problem.

Interesting, if a little disheartening. Thanks for the info DarkMeph, I appreciate the effort.

Hey foist,

Looking at your post in the other thread you posted in, it seems that you've somehow managed to get your game working again. Can you confirm this is the case?

Yes, I've stumbled onto a way to get it working by playing around with the different ways to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode (the command+F key, the checkbox in the in-game options panel, and the fullscreen option in the top Mac menu bar). The problem is I don't know how to reliably reproduce it. The game seems to be fully capable of running fullscreen on my system once it gets 'tricked' into doing so. I can play for hours in fullscreen with no anomalous behavior, unless I wish to make some kind of resolution switch. It had been stable for months and I brought back the graphics glitch because I changed the game's screen resolution (I had been running at highest resolution but wanted to make it smaller so it would be easier to click on the interface elements). To this day I have not been able to run the game fullscreen at a resolution other than the highest one). This whole resolution thing would be less of a problem if I could use my system's standard cursor instead of the huge in-game custom cursor which feels so imprecise, but that's a different issue. smiley: smile I feel like a solution is tantalizingly close, but I don't like the prospect of having to randomly play with the resolution controls for 20 minutes to get the game to run fullscreen again should I want to try a different resolution. Such a great game, and obviously a fix is more complicated than it seems like it would be (I don't know anything about programming, purely an end-user here), but it sure would be nice if the resolution controls worked as intended.

Ideally it'd be great if we managed to solve the issue, but I can't make promises as to whether we'll have the resources to get this solved (bug-fixing on Mac is potentially harder for us, and there is very little scope for further work on the first Endless Space with the second one in the pipeline).

You might have to keep on holding the aerial while shaking the mouse and poking the screen...

I can certainly understand that, and I appreciate the honesty. Can't expect the same level of support for a platform with less market share. I only wish I'd mentioned the problem like two years ago before everyone was busy on Endless Space 2.
