Pirates: Why They Are Your Friends

I want to start off by stating this very specifically is targeted towards MP games and more specifically MP Hosts

I keep coming across people that hate pirates, and frankly I don't understand why.

First pirates are completely manageable

  • Pirates almost never appear before turn 10, generally not before turn 15.
  • Pirates will not spawn in any system you are able to see ships in.

With these two facts it is very easy to station scouts in scattered systems and usually one scout can cover 2-4 systems, remember your ship visual range is actually slightly larger than the sight circle around your ships/systems.

Now how does this make pirates your friend? Simple, other people don't do this and they have to deal with pirates, second you have ready to go scouts to explore the galaxy once you settle those systems, and finally its much harder for other players to sneak in and settle near you.

Another side benefit is that pirates tend to keep you on your toes. Having to deal with pirates means you need to keep a small military which is good, because you never know when a player will go from friendly to "hey that system of yours with a jungle looks yummy."

Please consider playing your future games with the pirate option set to at least normal.

Thank you

I've been using this strategy to pretty good effect online, too. I might end up with a slow start and have to deal with pirates myself for a few turns, but it definitely isn't as bad as it used to be, now that I know how to handle them. And, at the least, it forces me to keep a military built, like you said. I always tend to slack off there, and pay for it later.

Whacking early game pirates is also a great way to level up a Hero quickly.

I agree pirates are completely managable. I would only add that you should put your ships on Guard as well. I have had instances where just having a ship in a system did not prevent them from spawning. But perhaps there were other factors involved like reduced scanner range. I can say that putting one in each system without influence zone of control will keep them out period no matter how late in the game.

Good topic!

Insane pirate, best pirate. Never understand why most MP games are without them smiley: wink

Without them the game goes so much slower and thats one less thing you can use to your advantage smiley: smile

I don't hate pirates, I just strongly dislike anyone who makes a living by praying on the weak and stealing.

I think of pirates as an early opportunity to level up my heroes and get a leading edge. Really helps if you get lucky and get a commander hero (+50XP hp gain) + administrator hero. You can slap him on a 5-6 planet system after a good few fights and have an industrial superworld with a rapidly growing population! Or even better a commander/pilot for an awesome fleet to win your border skirmishes early and have the great systems for the taking!

A good pirate is always a dead pirate. smiley: smile

Pirates can be a pain sometimes when all of your fleets are out there conquering the known galaxy, but I have to admit, they are pretty useful in helping me level up my heroes or fleets.

I think pirates are a good thing in MP matches as well, sure it can be a pain to put fog busters out, but esp if you are using an arm map, those pirates in the center slow down super-expansion builds and level the playing field. I personally like to set constellations to many so that your 'home' area is small, making the early pirate even easier to fog bust, but there are lots of pockets for pirates to crop up in post-casimir.

not to mention races that use a science increase per ship destroyed that get stuck behind a wormhole enjoy pirates to eat up and get that early (sometimes gamesaving) science boost.

Especially if you get a great hero to eat up all the experience that fleet gains. Love it! smiley: smile

Pirates are alright I guess, I've only started playing but one thing I have to say is man the game progresses slow, I'm enjoying it but it seems more of a short burst of a game then play the game the next day kind of game. Its just not as fluid or fast as say Civlization, and I don't feel like I see progress as much.

I don't know if this might work for you, but I usually turn up the game speed during galaxy generation to simulate that fast-paced feeling you get in Civ 5, with the initial expansion rush and border settlement fortification/military churn. smiley: smile

I don't like them. They are only annoyance with their system blockades.
