As an Aussie, I must first suggest to try fiddling with the Steam Regions in Steam's settings window. For less popular games (strictly speaking), I sometimes need to switch to the bigger US or UK regions at odd hours.

any recommended regions to swop 2?

sigh swopping between regions to look for games is annoying inventing the multilayer system like is stupid...

the endless circle of

close endless space > change region > restart steam > open endless space > check server list > repeat

Yep, even for games I genuinely thought were popular enough, I'm still surprised by our regional predicament. Either that, or the only people on the list lag/time out when you connect to them (this applies for alot of games).

Off the top of my head, the popular regions I've had success with are the US LA, NY and DC servers, and sometimes UK London. But just in case you run into further troubles, if you're not seeing games on these regions at pretty much most times of the day it might be something on your end (which is a bad and good thing in itself I guess).
