Why ever use "Living Hulls"?

When I am researching military technologies I came across the "living hulls" technology which restores 2% per battle turn (I think, not sure), and 2% on fleet per turn. I was wondering, since it is so far down the tech tree, why would one ever get this over the "intelligent tools" upgrade, which restores 10% on ship per battle turn and 5% on fleet? It just seems so useless to spend all that science into an inferior technology.. smiley: confused

Living Hulls effects all ships in your fleet. Intelligent Tools only the one which is equipped with it.

For example, your fleet has 6 ships all with Living hulls. In each battle phase 12% of the hull will be repaired (6x2%).

Intelligent Tools is 10% ship repair per battle phase and 2% fleet repair per turn in friendly sectors.

Living Hulls is 2% fleet repair per battle phase and 2% fleet repair per turn in all sectors.

The per turn repair from both is the same percentage, however Living Hulls repairs your ships in enemy territory, Intelligent tools doesn't. Since Living Hulls is 2% fleet repair per battle phase, as long as your fleet has more than 5 ships with this repair module it will repair more than 10%, which Lord_S already explained.

I'll take the example a little further. That late in the game you should have at least 20 command points unless you ignored the other side of the tech tree. Lets say you made an all destroyer fleet and all have Living Hulls. That's 20 ships each providing 2% repair to the entire fleet per battle phase. That's a whopping 40% repair each battle phase or 4x as much as the Intelligent Tools can repair.

in theory it might work but in practise its not that of a big deal.

in its current state they have absolutely 0 benefit for me and i would never use them.

Depends how aggressively you fight, it would be great for the Hissho or the Cravers, but not really the Amoeba.
