"The Automatons were created by a long dead civilization known as the Reyans who perished many millennia ago due to the gradual self-destruction of their world. Decades of uncontrolled industrialization and technologies that relied on a highly toxic underground fuel caused irreversible damage to the ecosystem and atmosphere of their planet. Realizing that they were doomed, the Reyans attempted to build a massive fleet of migration ships to escape their planet, but most of the ships either exploded on launch, or stalled in the atmosphere and fell to the ground. The Reyans despaired… and so they decided to leave a legacy in the form of one of their greatest technological achievements, clockwork beings. Having a very old and proud history of clockwork, the Reyans had achieved the maximum potential of the technology in their creation of massive clockwork men to which they gifted all the traits of a young species. Within a year of the creation of the clockwork men, the Reyans committed mass suicide so as not to suffer through the affects of a dying planet, leaving their greatest creations behind, alone, and lost.

Over time the clockwork creations of the Reyans developed a simple society of their own and began exploiting the technologies left behind by their creators. All was well for the young civilization of machines until one day a large Endless ship crashed into the planet spreading the dust it was transporting all over the surface. The dust modified the machines, gave them enhanced abilities and over time even sentience. The deadly and toxic fuel that used to power the machines was also replaced, but strangely the new fuel became dust. In only a few weeks, the clockwork machines had evolved, become truly sentient, and gained new purpose in existence which was unheard of in even the most advanced AI’s created by the Endless. They came to call themselves, the Automatons and with the newly gained freedom of dust they began learning…and advancing.

The Automaton Civilization stayed on their planet, learning to live in a symbiotic relationship with nature as the planet healed over time. They used the knowledge of their creators and their new dust engines to produce massive floating ships on which they lived in order to protect the healing ecosystem on the planet from their involvement. Over the course of centuries the planet healed and the Automatons learned to live with and love nature while still developing immense industrial capacity and production within the hulls of their floating ships --which had also grown over time. But eventually the Automatons calculated that their dust supply would run out and their civilization would die, so they uncovered the old ruins of the crashed endless ship and began developing their own vehicles for space flight.."

Prelude:

'Mother',

'Adjective, 'bearing a relation like that of a mother, as in being the origin, source, or protector.'

Homeworld. The life giver. Origination of the materials of our constructions, bounty for the organic nutrients consumed by our creators. Symbiant to our progenitors whom were gifted with the spark of intelligence.

Once classified as Hydrus I by the Reyans. Now the vessel for the birth and expansion of a new race, touched by grace and destined for the stars. The Automatons.

Unit 714 shambled down the corridor, it's arms brushing lush green flora emerging triumphant from cracks in the rust coloured walls. Through bulkhead 7 to bulkhead 14 it had traveled, seeking the observation deck at the fore of the ship. 714 stopped, knelt down, it's eye fixated on a flowing red rose protruding from a busted rivet. The eye circled and traversed the shape from stem to petals. There was a barely registrable lag in it's analysis of the lifeform, the lag could be called, enjoyment. 714 enjoyed analyzing the lifeforms flowing through and invading the ship. The ship 'Caretaker' has now been, un-opposed as it was, overrun by such lifeforms. Innumerable different colours and shapes with scents nearly as rich as if the ship itself were the jungle home-world beneath.

The first lifeforms were brought along by a rogue unit who, touched by the grace encountered a single flower, and in it's cupped hand brought the lifeform back to the ship, caring for it. As more units came and went from the surface soil was distributed amongst the nooks and crannies, life forms were more and more brought back for study and.... pleasure. The life forms began to spread, to grow and find against all odds small parcels of soil hidden, deposited, sometimes aided by units in their ever expanding need for nutrients and soil.

Caretaker now had a thin later of soil along the entire length of the hull. Vines and thorns more often covered the walls than metal. The Units' provided for the life forms so that they could enjoy them further, as a man would for a familiar stray dog.

Unit 714 stood and continued walking, stopping occasionally to admire some new mutation of vine or thistle to twitch its spines before him. Upon arriving at the observation deck the magnified screen was amass with deep blue oceans and lush green jungle with the haze of a vibrating canopy abundant with life. Birds and beasts flying and running with complete freedom from the un-natural predators of their past. The only technology to be seen were the landing platforms, camouflaged with overgrown jungle vines and animal movement. So accustomed are the animals with the Units' that they no longer feared the roar of an engine or the hollow mechanical plod-plod-plod of a the Automaton servo-motored limbs.

To-Be Continued.....

*I will be continuing(Beginning!) This 'story' as my game turns progress. So the story's advancement will be dictated by how frequently I play turns. Inspired by the race 'Automatons'.
