So I decided to do some fun stuff for the Faction Creation Competition since I have a lot of free time on my hands. So here it is a complete timeline of the events that led up to the creation of the Automaton race. I will probably continue this slightly further into what I call the “Age of the Automatons”, but I will write it as a story rather than a list….Also working on more art!

4000 Years Before Automatons

A young planet later to be called Reya by its people was inhabited early on by simple tribes who wandered the land looking for resources and food. These tribes were very similar in the ways they lived and thought, but there were a few minor differences that would eventually manifest themselves into hatred and conflict. The planet Reya was inhabited by few fauna, but its flora dominated the land with species that ranged from carnivores to Nitrogen filterers. It is a low gravity world which allows the flora of the planet to grow extremely large and tall even to the point that low flying aircraft would be in danger. One large Ocean covered the planet and was divided only by a massive mountain range running along a tectonic plate fault line. The main land mass of the island also developed along this same tectonic fault line. The largest forests of the planet actually develop on this land mass because they use geothermal heat pockets for nutrients. This early in time the tribes of Reya suffered many hardships as they attempted to survive the massive and dangerous forests of the planet.



3000 Years Before Automatons

After a Millennium of wandering and fighting off savage beasts and plants the tribes organized themselves, unknown to each other, into three tribes: The Island Tribe, The Western Tribe, and The Eastern Tribe. With the people organized under a leadership, the tribes began developing and growing very quickly and even fighting back against the many dangers of the planet. The Western Tribe devised a system for tracking and hunting down migrating plants that threatened their village. The Eastern tribe devised a system of wooden fortifications that they use to keep the predatory animals of the plains away. The Island Tribe developed the first ships to use in fishing and transporting people quickly. It is at this point in the history of the planet that the differences between the tribal groups began to manifest. Domesticating, taming, and breeding were the solution of the Eastern tribe to the many dangers of the wild while the Western tribe believed the only way was to kill the wild plants and animals of the planet. And although the tribes have no contact with each other for now, they eventually clashed in a brutal war.



2000 Years Before Automatons

This is the dark age of the planet when war engulfed the old tribes of the planet due to their simple differences in survival. During this age the Western tribe sent a large expedition of warriors with simple wood and metal weapons across the great mountain range where they made contact with the Eastern Tribe. Due to a misunderstanding the Western soldiers butchered a large herd of migrant flora species which greatly angered the Eastern tribesmen and they banished the soldiers back across the mountains.

While the soldiers were away in their two year long travel, a radical military leader had taken power in the Western tribe encouraging the extermination of the planet’s flora and fauna. When the soldiers returned and told their tale of a tribe that domesticated the dangerous floral species of the planet the leader ordered an immense army across the mountains complete with heavy siege weapons to wipe out the heretic tribe. It took the army a year to cross the vast expanse of land, but when they arrived they immediately began massacring the Eastern tribe and destroying its fortified towns. Within 3 months the Western Soldiers had taken twelve fortified towns and were celebrating their coming victories against the eastern barbarians. During this celebration, the Eastern Armies counter attacked using their herds of domesticated predators including a species of plant which burrows underground and jumps up only to kill anyone in its way. The Western soldiers were butchered with little effort and the Eastern Armies quickly retook their lost towns. This was the beginning of a centuries old conflict that would eventually result in the demise of both tribes as they fought each other to extinction.



1000 Years Before Automatons

As the eternal ideological war raged on the main continent, devastating the lands, and resulting in the deaths of millions, on the far away island of the now reformed Island Empire a brilliant discovery had been made. A group of prospectors accidentally discovered Tyridian gas, a very potent, but poisonous fuel that could be used in industry and power generation. Over the course of a century, the Empire had quickly adopted the use of Tyridian gas and even discovered that it had the ability to lift objects when interacting with an electric field. Within another hundred years the Empire was producing massive Tyridian airships and factories allowing it to jump far ahead of the other two civilizations on the planet.



800 Years Before Automatons

The Island Empire discovers the existence of the Eastern and Western Nations and determines that they have almost completely decimated each other over the course of their thousand year war. With this information in their hands, the Island Empire rulers declare a crusade against the barbaric nations of the mainland and call to war the people of their nation. Within a year the Island Empire constructs and assembles a massive armada of 700 heavier then air invasion ships fully loaded with mechanized troops. The Eastern and Western nations were to this day unaware of the existence of a third nation as they had focused all their lives on each other’s destruction.



786 Years Before Automatons

The Island Empire invasion ships cross the ocean into the lands of the Western nation and within only a week they conquer the Western capitol with little effort. The Western Armies still using bows and swords are horrified and routed by the mere sight of the Island Empire Airships resulting in a complete conquest within only a year.

At the same time the Eastern nation is completely unaware of what is happening on the other side of the great mountain range. Their leaders cautiously deliberate on whether the Western nation has finally grown tired of the war as there have been no new attacks over the mountains. Little do they know, the Invasion ships of the Island Empire were only returning to their bases to refuel on Tyridian gas. It is during this lull in fighting that Western refugees begin crossing the mountain range into the Eastern nation and bringing with them the horrifying tale of how demons of the air came and destroyed their whole civilization in only a year. The leaders of the Eastern nation were horrified, but they viewed the refugees with distrust, so they decided to simply station guard armies on the borders. This would prove to be a fatal mistake.



783 Years Before Automatons

The newly refueled and rearmed invasion ships flew over the great mountain range and began systematically decimating the Eastern nation. They lasted longer in the fight due to their slight foreknowledge of their enemies, but within two years the Eastern nation also fell to the invasion army, and in this way the world was united by the newly formed Reyan Empire.



780 Years Before Automatons

Reyan Empire Airships map the entirety of the globe and begin exploiting newly discovered Tyridian gas deposits all over the planet.



750 Years Before Automatons

Reyan Astronomers determine that the planet revolves around a star and that there may be many more planets in the skies.



740 Years Before Automatons

Reyan Empirial Capitol moved to a new location centrally located on the border between the old Eastern and Western nations. A massive clockwork city is constructed to represent the hope and power of the Empire.

700 Years Before Automatons

The very first difference engine in history is constructed by the Reyans in their constantly evolving exploitation of Tyridian gas. Around the same time, scientists determine that Tyridian gas emissions are poisoning the atmosphere of the planet.



600 Years Before Automatons

Tyridian gas emissions continue to darken the skies, and the planet’s climate and ecosystems begin collapsing completely.



570 Years Before Automatons

The Empirial government imposes a law which forces all the people in the empire to wear air filters when they go outside for any period of time.



560 Years Before Automatons

Empirial scientists in secret determine the atmosphere is being eaten away and that the oceans are beginning to evaporate due to greater heat from the sun.



500 Years Before Automatons

The Science council of the Reyan Empire advises the leadership to begin considering extreme actions in an attempt to stop the decay of their planet.



470 Years Before Automatons

News that the planet may not survive much longer reaches the public after years of secrecy and martial law is imposed by the Reyan leadership to keep order.



468 Years Before Automatons

The Empire orders scientists to begin work on a possible way to escape the planet and save their species.



462 Years Before Automatons

Empirial Scientists announce that the damage to the planet is so great that within only a few hundred years every living being on the planet will die.



459 Years Before Automatons

Empirial government begins the Exodus project whose ultimate goal is to evacuate as much of the population off the planet as possible. People from all over the empire begin working to construct massive evacuation capsules and building the infrastructure to support the massive undertaking.



273 Years Before Automatons

The first fully functioning capsule prototype is built and tested before being placed on a launch pad and loaded with materials the evacuees may need.



78 Years Before Automatons

The fleet of evacuation capsules is completed and is loaded with most of the remaining materials on the planet.



70 Years Before Automatons

The Empirial government begins the process of choosing people for the evacuation starting with the most necessary personnel and moving on to those who designed and built the capsules.



68 Years Before Automatons

The great clockwork master E’tan is born in a small village west of the Empirial Capitol.



32 Years Before Automatons

The Reyan species says their prayers and begins the launch procedures of the evacuation capsules. Dozens of the massive capsules explode on their launch pads due to engine failures and many more simply fail to reach a sufficient altitude and fall back to the ground. Of the 325 capsules built only 6 left the Atmosphere of the planet, their fate forever unknown. The Reyan people are defeated and return to their homes with heavy hearts as they realize that their fate is sealed.



14 Years Before Automatons

The Clockwork Master E’tan builds a completely functioning clockwork man within his workshop and establishes himself as the greatest inventor in the history of the Reyan species.



12 Years Before Automatons

E’tan travels through and increasingly harsh environment to the Empirial Capitol where the leadership sits, and makes a proposal to them; a way to save the species.



11 Year Before Automatons

The Empirial Leadership approves E’tan’s plan and so a final act is set in motion during which a group of 300 clockwork men are to be built and endowed with E’tan’s newly created miniature difference engine.



3 Years Before Automatons

The remaining 6 million Reyans on the planet complete construction of the clockwork men after which E’tan inserts a difference engine into each. These difference engines give the clockwork men artificial sentience and as they awaken E’tan dubs them the Automatons.



0 Years Before Automatons

The Empirial Leadership detonates every Tyridian gas Power plant on the planet simultaneously in an attempt to atone for their mistakes. The newly Awakened Automatons watch as the cities of their creators go up in flames and destruction and the last of the remaining 3 million Reyans are killed. It was the suicide of a species, but it was also the birth of a future.
