Thanks for the feedback smiley: smile I had totally forgotten about this project, but now I'm reshaping the chassis to be more sophon like (an excellent point, Caputt) and I'll slap two more anti-personnel cannons on the back, replace the secondary turret with an EMP cannon, and install 6 ATGM launchers smiley: twisted

paratroopers might be a problem. now i'm not talking about the present day slow moving paratroopers easily shot out of the sky, i'm talking about some sort of futuristic high G diving paratroopers that are too fast and too small a target for a tank to hit. i think that may be a challengesmiley: wink

Wow, nice discussion! Sophon tanks vs Vaulter insurgency. I like it!

tbh there are three suitable answers that come to my mind about the question.

1) Tanks are not used in wars vs insurgents/guerilla warfare. If your main concern when your tank is stopped is that someone might plant a bomb under it, then the tank should not be fighting that war. tanks are practically useless in that kind of combat. The main concern when your tank is idling should be a sneak attack by another tank division or some other large enemy movement.

2) As for when the tank is unmanned and idling at a base behind friendly lines (making it vulnerable to a trained spy/saboteur) there is almost always a system where a crew member of the tank has to stand guard over the tank. The British forces in WWII did this quite a bit.

3) As for when a tank is stopped on a hill and providing fire support, it *should* almost always have infantry that it is shielding from fire. At this point and in all other similar combat situations, it is up to the infantry to protect the flanks and guard the tank.

But to be sure there is a problem with shells that could land under the tank and destroy it, so I'll be sure to give that some thought smiley: wink anything else you guys can see that might need fixing?

Well for a conventional tank it indeed is a good thing to not give any potential openings, be it for dug in or sneaky saboteurs Or exploding ammunition landing under the tank/between Turret and chassis. However this is a hovertank. This makes it impossible to "seal off" the area below the tank and probably comes with some armour on the bottom. OR fancy sophon anti 9/10* hazards Technology, because a sophon tank will not simply have extra armour plating smiley: wink

*as we know the sophons this weakness probably is to people crawling under it and planting explosives, as "why would any sane sophon do such a thing?", unlike it's total immunity to Darmstadtium bullets.

that isn't necessarily true, people before have dug man-sized holes in the ground before waiting for tanks to go overhead and then planting explosives on the underbelly. besides tanks don't always advance, they sometimes act as mobile artillery holding land against enemies, giving ample opportunity for what i have already described to happen. as for noticing this happening, i would believe that the tank's crew manning the guns would not notice a person/robot/trained animal? going underneath where their guns could point.

If your tank is sitting there long enough for someone to crawl under it and place explosives without you noticing, you're doing something wrong.

the particle effects make it much more clear that the tank is levitating, guns on the front of the tank not attached to the turret are interesting, and all the extra turret guns makes this a very capable tank in most directions. Although, since it is levitating, there is likely quite a bit of room underneath, what happens if someone crawls under it and places explosives?

Excellent Idea. I put up a test render of the new tank with the in progress weaponry. It would be nice to have some opinions on it vs the original.

Hey all,

Ever since Disharmony I really couldn't stop thinking about what invasions would look like, with assault ships and ground vehicles and such. So recently, after a few sketches, I modeled and textured this tank.

Test Render 2:

Test Render 1:

let me know what you think. smiley: smile

I'm a person who is pretty stretched for time, so I would like to know: Should I put this tank into a full blown battle scene? I've done scenes like that before but they take allot of time, so if no one is interested in this, I won't do it.

btw the scene is lit the way it is for good contrast, ie, the tank wouldn't have its distortion lights on during night OPs or something.

done in support of ground battles for ES

thx

Thanks, yeah I'm a pretty big fan of the TRON look so that may have played a role

Just my 2 cents on mines being developed on par to hovering tanks.

Yeah it quite amazing how fast countermeasures adapt to new technology. But wouldn't a mine set to go off based on the tanks tremors be quite easily countered too? If there were these landmines and I were a tank inventor, I would simply use Sonic Projection to re-create the tremors of the tank through microwaves to set off the mines from about 1 km away. And I think electromagnetic fields could be used to neutralize the other types to some extent, too.

But as Sov and Nasarog said, mine evasion probably not the point, more just terrain maneuvering and IED evasion

Looks just amazing as nasarog said a bit TRON spirit in it which is awesome and i noticed the bit of hoovering too.

btw: The Point of Hoover Tanks is the maneuverability on almost every terrain, mines would of course adapt itself very quickly.

Actually, if there were hover-tanks and I'd be a landmine-inventor, I'd built mines designed to search for characteristic tremors in the earth if it were a gas expulsion based hovering mechanism or use a metal-detector like induction-based sensor or had a glasswire spycam with infrared optical tank-identification.

In any case, the mine would catapult itself upward from the ground by an initial charge, then latch onto the tank, melt itself with some thermite-like implement through the armor and therefore through the hovering-mechanism, then explode to do maximum damage. If that thing still floats, afterwards, I'd be surprised. Just my 2 cents on mines being developed on par to hovering tanks. smiley: stickouttongue

thanks for the compliments! Yeah I probably should have explained how the tank's propulsion system worked first. As Nasarog said, hovering tanks are most likely the way of the future, and if you look very closely at the picture, you may notice that there is a distance between the tank itself and it's reflection. I know this is extremely subtle, and in a render with a muzzle flash I added a slight particle effect to illustrate the hovering.

it looks like something a sophon would use, but what about practicality? would tanks like that be used in invasions of planets with difficult terrain such as lava or jungle? nevertheless it looks great in my opinion and if you can manage it, it would look fantastic in a battle scene.
