Well, looking at other Amplitude games, it would be a combination of both. Free updates, (smaller) dlc's and feature rich-expansions.

But if anyone has a bit of info about their ideas for HK I'm all ears. With how they handle cultures and wonders there's a ton of stuff they could add & ditto possibilities to sell it. All kinds of themed packs could be created, I would even pay for cosmetic ones, yes sir :-)

I'm thinking that it might be worthwhile to look at their latest game, Endless Space 2 to see what might be come free and what might be DLC.

Free might be content for endless day, annual event that runs from January 21st to January 25th to celebrate the anniversary of Amplitude Studios. Also maybe we might get a wonder or skin, likely something like victor will be made available.

Endless space DLC included:

  • Vaulters brought back one of the most popular factions of the Endless Universe: the Vaulters.
  • Supremacy introduced the Hissho Major Faction, as well as the Behemoth Ship class and upgrades.
  • Penumbra introduced the espionage/hacking feature, invisibility and the community-created faction: the Umbral Choir.
  • Awakening introduced the Nakalim playable Major faction as well as the Academy Empire, you are now  able to interact and negotiate directly with the NPC academy

So what kind of DLC can we wish for/expect?

  • Religion. We have a barebones system that can be improved upon. This can easily add religion oriented civilizations
  • Diplomacy. We definitely can see a DLC that introduces the UN or world congress mechanics. Can build on the religion system by creating a Apostolic Palace system like in CIV 4
  • Colonies and Minor factions. Unlikely, but would bring much more depth to things such as naval power and outposts.

Yeah, I guess it's ok, I don't mind paying for a full feature rich expansions

I really liked New Frontier Pass in Civ 6

Given all the factions in Endless, I do hope they have a model where they add new cultures in each era. And maybe even new affinities.

The current trend is release 2-4 really well polished expansions and then hand the project over to NimbleGiant who can undo 5 years of hard work while the positive review % counter slowly drops under the weight of complaints about bugs and multiplayer.
I'm really hoping they set a new trend with Humankind

I like Amplitude's ES2 expansion method and hope to see the same for Humankind...3/4 or more large paid expansions that introduce new mechanics to the game. Small free fun updates (a new quest or a new wonder for e.x.) here and there.

As Hooraytio said, I still dislike how ES2 ended with an expansion handed off to another developer and done so poorly that enabling it ruins the game. Keep Humankind in-house!

New Frontier Pass was during the covid lockdown so things were probably tough for Firaxis putting out content. However NFP was almost pure garbage and the one of the worst expansion in the Civ series. The civ leader art was not as high quality as the rest of the game (understandable devs working from home). But all but one of it is new game modes were vampires and make-belief. I didn't mind the content drip method but would never have purchased it if I knew almost all content was out of genre. In Humankind, I don't think the devs are going to make this mistake, as they're planning to do a special sci-fi scenario, which makes me think they'll keep the sci-fi contained to that.
