Help needed regarding ranged units

I have taken to automating battles, simply because time after time, I am told that my ranged unit's target is outside my unit's line of sight.

It makes absolutely no sense to me.  There's my unit, two tiles away from the target, but no-go.  True for my noble javelineers, and now again for my crossbowmen.  So what is this line of sight rule?  Or how can you see what this game considers to be within line of sight.  I enjoy the rest of the game, but at this point tactical battles have to be automated, which seems like a shame.

I'm not sure anyone know the exact line of sight rules. One thing is however if you select a ranged unit and hold over possible tile to move on, you may see a red circle or something around enemy unit which tells you that you can attack those.

What I have seen about line of sight:

  • Unit block line of sight of units behind it.
  • Forest block line of sight same way as units.
  • Higher elevation block line of sight

Archers do not require Line of Sight to shoot, but suffer penalty from lack of it. Gunner units do require Line of Sight, that means their missiles can't fly over tiles that are above themselves, so Crossbowmen can't shoot at people over a hill that lies between them, but can shoot at, for example, ones standing on a cliff over sea.

Now where it gets difficult is that certain terrain features (woodlands, forest) and even your own units are considered an obstacle and to shoot above them you need to be two levels of elevation above. Also, unlike usually in hex-based strategies, the missile needs all tiles to be clear to fire above them - for example if the missile would fly over two tiles side by side, generally only one of them would need to provide LoS, in HK it's both.

If it's still confusing, the game helps by highlighting the tiles with enemy which is a possible target with red border when you choose where to move.

No problem! That's something that comes up a lot and the 'two ticks of elevations' rule is one I've learnt through watching Amplitude streams, clears up manual combat a lot, which is, imo, great, because that's a really robust system once you get a hang of it.

Something else counterintuitive, and often irritating: The obstruction doesn't have to be fully in the way. If your gunner unit's line of sight is merely half blocked by an obstacle (no matter whether that's another unit, fortifications, mountain, etc.), it can't shoot the target.

In addition, I often have trouble shooting across water, especially from one region to another.
