Check the number of stars the unit card have, each star represent one level of veterancy.

You can check how much experinece a unit need by holding over the stars icon, see blue arrow in screenshot

How much xp a unit need seems to depend on the unit, like a chariot need more xp per level than a warrior, maybe based on the industry cost of the unit. How much xp a unit gain seems to be tied to how much damage the unit deal (and maybe also suffers), probably each unit have an xp value and a unit get a part of this xp value depending on how much % hp damage it deal, like an unit with xp value of 20 and a unit deal 80% damage to it will maybe get 16 xp points.
