I just finished my first game, so I am no expert.

I came in 2nd with 8 stars in the final era vs the ai's 7....on turn 300 he had me by about 250 points.

Loved my first play through...HOWEVER....at turn 300, and being in 2nd place, I had over 28 techs undiscovered.  I had just did tanks and airplanes but never got to even build any of them before we hit turn 300!

Normally I would say I was way behind in tech but again I was in 2nd place!

After the game I checked the charts and for science I was in 1st or 2nd the entire game, which means the other AI players never even got to tanks or airplanes....

Doesn't that seem really off????

I had this, fixed it by having a bigger map with more land, so you can have more districts, more science and everything. Devs probably need to fix some numbers too

Some people can research all techs within 120-150 turns on normal speed. I take my time but usually by turn 200 I am done with most of the tech tree and have 5 to 10 techs remaining, even on standard maps.

Did you research Patronage and build Manufactories over resources to get their wondrous effects ? You might also want to get a culture with Science focus in the Contemporary era or before that to give you some boost if you see yourself falling behind.

Play on Nation and above difficulty - apart from the bonuses this makes the AI more aggressive and they start more wars. This leads to conquering new lands and Osmosis events which grant additional Research and help them in the long term.

Thanks for the advice, but honestly I am not worried about the fact that I didnt finish the tree, what about the AI???  There was 4 AIs that finished the game with over 35 techs open I would guess!

The ai economy buildup is not working well right now, like it seems to get stuck with low stability and spam commons next to other commons which give no stability which make them spam more commons without ever solving their stability issue. Because they do this, they fail at building up their economy, including research and thus fall behind.
