Is Floating market too good?

+5 industry on top of +3 industry for districts and the EQ counting as a makers quarter seems a bit ridiculous ...

I do like the idea of it getting some adjacency bonuses to help sync up with late game industrial costs and give carthage EQ bonuses but that +5 just seems like too much icing.

If the math really says to be a builder they need EQ to have industry bonuses as well maybe instead have it grant adjacent Harbors +3 industry. It's already clearly meant to be adjacency focused.

That district is quite well balanced - it is not too powerful either as a Merchant quarter or Maker's quarter. The tricky part is its placement - unlike port and port-like Emblematic quarter which can be placed directly on any coast or lake tile, the Floating market needs to be connected to a city centre or Hamlet via other districts. It also does not exploit water-tiles.

This makes a bit harder to place for some players and probably about a quarter to half of your territories won't be able to build it on time or at all.

Granting +3 Industry to adjacent ports won't do much as you can at best have 3 port-like districts in a territory. That bonus would be very low and hard to trigger on most maps. I like how the bonuses are offset by the tricky placement of the district, much like the Polder of the Netherlands in Civ 6.

This is false. It does need connection, unlike harbors.

No it doesn't, unless my game is bugged. I have a game with plenty of Siamese Floating Markets placed randomly (no connection) on coastlines.

Same. I think making that industry bonus only gained by placing it adjacent to other harbors might be an interesting middle ground - in addition to scaling with adjacency bonuses it's still real real good. Otherwise you can just drop it down anywhere on a coast and it's basically always good.

If it's supposed to they broke the code.

If their experimenting well it's busted good without having to build next to a coastal city hex - even then I still think it's pretty busted.

I will need to test this, but in my latest game I went with the Siamese and could not place the Floating market willy-nilly. It was always connected in a way to an Administrative centre, Main plaza or a Hamlet.

@Ningauble Are you playing a beta or the latest stable patch ? This does look good for those people who asked for easier placement, but makes the floating market very powerful.

It seems my latest game was started before the patch as it still had some limitations when placing the floating markets for myself.

It has to be next to land (like a harbor) but not a main plaza/administrative center/hamlet connected district.

That's been my experience as well. I'm not sure if there's a bug letting people sometimes place it willy-nilly?

it used to require being connected to the city center, the latest patch (no beta) that changed to a harbor-style placement. See you were both right :)
