Maybe I'm imagining things, but the AI seems to be more proficient the more of them in the game there are. I played a game earlier with 6 AI on humankind difficulty and in the classical era 3 of them advanced to the next era in 5 turns. Conversely, I played a game with 3 AIs on humankind difficulty and I was able to outstrip the AI by the end of classical era. Seems very bizarre, but I swear the AI gets more competitive the more of them there are in the game
I think this might be because there are good AIs (which includes avatar bonuses but also how lucky they were with curiosities in neolithic, starting tiles and which civ they managed to pick) and not so good AIs and if you have 9 of them it is quite probable that some will be good / will have a good start and then these AIs can bully and / or vassalize the slower ones to get a decent advantage.
Of all the times I have played in HK difficulty, the only match where the AI remained competitive well into early modern was because orange AI had vassalized the other 8 AIs.
