Hello, I am a total novice, but I am interested in the game. I know one can create and customize an avatar, but one relevant factor in my decision is whether there are preset historical figures as leaders in a similar fashion to what Civilization 6 has. Is this the case? Also, what is the difference between the avatar and a leader as currently established for Civ 6? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

There are absolutely no historical characters or leaders in the game at the moment. There are only historical units, buildings and cultural/natural wonders. The avatars seems to more of a mythological or completely fictional origin, for example gilgamesh and midas are featured.

If you're interested in historical leaders, you can make them yourself or download some player-made ones. There are several in THIS THREAD if you scroll down. THIS MOD allows you to make multiple leaders you can name how you want and use in your own game (and you can download a player-made "Cleopatra" there as well).

The avatars in HK are the leader you will play and encounter through an entire game. Each AI avatar possesses certain characteristics that influence their behavior in various ways. When you design an avatar you can decide which of these characteristics you want it to have.

Unlike in Civ VI, an HK leader does not get a single cluster of bonuses/buildings/special units they keep through the entire game. Instead, each era you can change the culture your leader runs. Each culture comes with bonuses and a district and unit that are unique to that culture. When you move on from a culture, you will retain all the  special districts you built, but you won't be able to build that culture's special district anymore. You will retain a "legacy bonus" (one of the bonuses the culture came with) and the ability to build the special unit of that culture until it is rendered obsolete by research. Thus, by the end of the game, your leader will have the legacy bonuses of numerous cultures (unless you opted to stay the same culture across eras), the special districts of numerous cultures, and a variety of special units to pick from when building your armies.
