Though I love discussing Humankind, it can sometimes be a bit disheartening to constantly focus on critiques of the game that are negatively focused.  I came across this YouTube channel today called Tasty Loot Gaming, and thought some of you, devs included, might enjoy this review by 3 gamers who picked up HK for the very first time in March.  They each played HK during March, and at month's end met to discuss what they thought of the game.  The video is long, so I recommend you skip over the early portion, where they talk about other games.

I'd recommend you jump in at the 18:15 mark, when Sarah begins her review:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh3USBb0kOg

Enjoy!

It was an interesting watch and made me realize how much more combat-oriented HK is than I initially thought, up to the point that person skipping the combat quite visibly had little fun with the game and was rather trying to bounce off the positives of others. Well, maybe it isn't sole focus, cause you can have fun in HK avoiding fighting, but once you get to it, manual combat seems to be mandatory, especially that the guesstimates provided by game are pure CS comparison, iirc, so you'll have no idea why you're loosing and/or winning most battles if you never touched it.

I noticed that too.  That's a great observation.

In contrast, Sarah clearly enjoyed the game the most.  And she was the only one who said she manually controlled the combat nearly all the time.

It makes me wonder if a great many players may have made the mistake that 2/3 of this team did:  Missed out on one of the most enjoyable parts of Humankind by almost always either "Instant Resolving" or "Auto-Resolving" combat.  Both of those combat settings rob the player of the really satisfying challenge of strategically managing units, defenses, and terrain to win battles that might otherwise be lost.

I don't know...  I prefer reviews by grizzled OpenDev players who knock back another shot of whiskey, light up a cigarette, and tell you what they think.  /s
