The AI is much improved and even though I am slightly ahead still in nation difficulty. The AI has better battle tactics and strategies, for the most part with harder AI able to keep up technology wise and only one nation is ahead in eras. But I am constantly fighting and even though I do have a tech advantage with muskets the ai is in medieval era and slowly catching up. But I am knocking them around pretty good lol I feel the update did what it was supposed to do and can't wait for the next one. Thanks for all the hard work. Even though I gave some back lash over the timing of the updates I understand it is a lot of work and I hope yall stick with it tell the full vision is realized. Since I am sure we aren't gonna get a humankind 2 tell like 20 years lol
In my opinion, AI is got worse, more radical early in the game。On humankind difficulty, all AI will declare war immediately, whether it's a complaint or a refusal. Even when applying for trade, AI tends to refuse. In other words, diplomacy has become a AI unilateral option。AI which chooses expansionism, remains radical even in low difficulty games.
The larger the map, the worse the resource settings。
In my recent game, human difficulty, huge ancient map, in ancient era, I have occupied one fifth of the territory, but there is only one horse, one copper mine and one iron ore, without any luxury resources。ridiculous。Plus the radical of AI,building troops requires resources, but there are not enough。fuck the dev
The AI improved dramatically with the last update, not only with better tactics during the battles but also with better strategy on the grand map, with coordinated and timed attacks. I only saw some bad timing on reinforces after the first push, so kudos to the developers on that. Now I hope that the devs can flesh out some mechanics, hopes up!
I've only played 40 turns or so since the update, but I don't see any improvement, quite the contrary. The AI still launches suicidal sorties, even at a huge disadvantage. I'm winning hard in fame since the Ancient era, which wasn't the case previously. In my last game I didn't pull ahead until Contemporary.
I believe that deciding factor of whether AI will perform a sortie is presence of ranged troops and the defending side lacking those (otherwise they wait until they have advantage, at least in my experience). It kind of makes sense, they'll only loose troops as siege advances and you'll be able to pick them out without own casualties in case of battle.
I do think that AI manages better currently, to the point that, yes, I managed to get early advantage in fame, but I had something that didn't happen to me earlier, namely quite some fame shuffling in Medieval and Early Modern, even dethroning me for a while. Cherry on top was when the AI was the one to trigger the scientific end game condition (though that wasn't a stellar move, because I still had a couple thousands of fame advantage over them, still surprised me).
Now, I'm playing on Nation and Endless, so I won't pretend I'm the best or even good, but on those settings I definitely can see improvements.
Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot to us :)
If you still encounter odd situations, consider writing about it in the AI Feedbacks forum (under Game Design and Ideas) and join a save file if you can. We are always looking for improvements, your feedbacks are a great source for that.

The AIs should only consider it if they think they can win or if they can't bring any reinforcement to help in the following turns. There's probably something we miss in the evaluation of the situation, but it's pretty hard to guess. Looking at the situation would help us understand. Do you have a save file showcasing the issue?

Weird, throughout my entire current run I actually never had a sortie. I was able to build all siege engines before fighting.

I am also playing nation on endless but unfortunately, the ai seems to have stalled once again when they reach early modern. Well could also be because I had most of the world vassalized lol but anyways, so one nation basically had an entire continent to themselves. With 8 cities. Well minus three territories. They made it to contemporary but their forces did not improve passed early modern. So there is still an issue with getting enough tech. Though I did notice that most cities were built better even though sometimes they have a army of market or science districts. But yeah they still need a little help with that. I feel they stay in eras longer though. Minus that one nation no one else jumped through eras. So it still needs a little work
Just wanted to add one more thing now that I'm near the end of the game. Pollution overall is manageable. The only thing I think that really needs to be addressed is the stability hit from low pollution. It really needs to be cut in half. Haven't gotten to city wide high pollution yet, though I am right below it should be the low pollution stability hit. It is rather larg and I have to make a ridiculous amount of garrisons to combat the stability hit. I feel just lowering the stability hit itself will help with pollution. World pollution is only at 30k and that with me and one other civilization polluting which isn't bad the the overall pollution cap needs to be 125k. I feel it that is a good era to be at if all the other nations were also in era V.

Cheers,
Alex.
Sorry, I don't have a save file, but I can give you a hint. In my most ridiculous sortie battle, the AI player probably didn't account for reinforcements, because they didn't have Organized Warfare, while I did.
Now let's comment about my current game. I'm in Early Modern era at run 90 with standard speed and my lead over the 2nd place AI has increased to over 2k fame. Admittedly, I had an amazing Ancient era as the Bantu and plenty of room for myself, but I've had similar conditions before and I never pulled ahead so easily.
The AI players are unusually friendly. They readily accept most treaties including alliances and never make demands of me. However, they wage war among themselves. Maybe I'm too powerful or too far away from them? I remember that such petty concerns didn't stop their aggression in the past.
I have a huge lead in technology with no science bonuses except the Neolithic legacy trait and not a single research quarter built. I used to race the AI to Patronage, while now I'm researching other tech paths first, because other players are far from researching any Early Modern techs.
To sum up the AI performance, I think it sucks and used to be a lot better.
Another thing I noticed is that luxury resources are unusually scarce, even though I'm at standard settings. We are on a huge map with mostly land and none of my opponents has even 10 artisan quarters. I just met one of the leading AI players and discovered that they have a grand total of ONE luxury resource. Myself, I have 20+ luxuries, but that's still much less than one per claimed territory. Before this game I abandoned another one because I uncovered 10 or more territories and didn't find a single luxury. Perhaps the map generator is bugged?
It's hard to be sure of anything without the save file, but I do have a couple of remarks and question:
- What difficulty setting are using?
- From what I understand, the starting positions seem unbalanced: you started isolated with the Bantus (meaning an excellent early economy) while the AIs had to struggle to stay alive
- AIs may not target you if it has "better targets" (eg. one they have more aversion to, one closer to their borders, one less powerful than you etc). I don't think there is any "target the player in priority" bias in the game and I don't think we'd want that. Usually, one AI gets the upper hand and manages to swallow the others, but that probably didn't happen in your game.
- I'm not sure I understand how you measured your science lead compared to the AI, can you develop that?
- We did notice some oddities with the world generator regarding the resource repartitions.
I measured my science lead just by era advancement. When I was the only player in Early Modern and there were no scientific cultures in the game, I knew my opponents couldn't research any Early Modern techs.
All in all, that game I described was definitely a highroll. Yesterday I started a new game and I'm not doing nearly as well.
