So the last game I played I had a good time playing it but was once again a bit disappointed with the game ending before the late game.  I now have time to come back and was just wondering....is the AI better at trying to win?  Other then making the game never end, is there away to get the game to the end technologies?

This two things are about the only things that made me take a break, I have limited gaming time and for me, the modern era and beyond is what I want to play the most, but I still want a game with a win condition other then kill everyone, so just wondering how feasible that is?

It got better, later game AI is much more challenging, industrial is very competitive except for some parts of naval warfare (but they also were improved) but contemporary has some issues like AI not using nukes and aerial/district bombardment.

There are quite a few things that have changed.
For example you can disable the turn limitation (it's on the customization when creating a new game), as that is one of the points you mentioned.

Game got much better with the latest updates! Both points you listed are improved or implemented! 

i only play unlimited turns and now love the challenge in late game! Sometimes AI beats me, but this is mostly if it picks soviets ;)

i think the steam rating for humankind is surely not matching the status of the game right now! its far superior!

I'm in the same situation, thinking about giving HK a second chance.

Has the performance issues been fixed? It was quite terrible for a long time.

You still get the occasional hangup in battle but for single player at least (I don't do multi-player, have no info there) it's a lot better. 

Today's a great day to give it another go with the new patch, just make sure to either opt I to the beta or wait for them to fix the crashing issues and relaunch it.
