So there are some old information on various bonuses AI gets based on difficulty levels accross the internet including this forum. However game tooltip says that AI opponents get slight or big bonuses if they fall behind. So does it mean they get bonuses only if they perform worse than the player? And what bonuses they get?

I'm not a great player anyway, I'm struggling to survive on Nation difficulty, the AI steamrolls me by Classical era. I don't get how they can build up two or more full armies having legendary units. On the other hand we're  almost head to head on Metropolis level where theoretically AIs get no bonuses.

It sure seems like they get more bonuses than just when behind, especially on the higher difficulty levels, though I don't know any specifics.  The AI does seem to focus on building units more than most human players do.  In my last game, I had left a few small opponents (2-4 territories each) around until the Industrial era.  When I finally attacked them, they had more than 75 units defending each of their cities but they were missing a ton of infrastructure and hadn't built their emblematic districts from every era.

This seems very true.

There's another thread about what to do with population is starving - of course, turn them into soldiers. Soldiers don't eat! So that's why the Ai can build so many units, they never have to worry about food and the gold maintenance is apparently not a problem. They also have a ton of ships that they have captured from curiosities, but don't have anything to do with them. They should disband them, but they don't.

I don't have the exact number but yes, the bonuses depends on several factors, including the difficulty. But the idea is that depends on the situation (dynamics) so if the AI is super behind, they will get some bonuses, so they can try to compete (in a way) and if they are super ahead the opposite they get nothing

Thanks for your answer @Daarkarrow. Does it mean that if AI gets no bonuses on Metropolis level and gets bonuses on Nation but only if it's behind and I experience that I got steamrolled on latter difficulty it's just that the AI plays better on Noation than on Metropolis?

The bonus is tied to their fame and the number of techs they unlocked. More fame decreases the bonus, while more techs increase it. This bonus is a percent increase to each city FIMS gains. It is not tied to you the player but to themselves.

There is also a base bonus value which is tied to era.

Yes on Metropolis or below no bonuses to the AI. On nation scale depending on the situation. But overall on Nation & above (apart from the bonuses) the AI is better.

That sounds amazing and totally acceptable though being in conflict with many other info shared throughout various forums like recent post in this thread from user shakee :)

But I see no objection of trusting a developer of the game  :)
