Making other player/culture combinations more visible

I find that when playing humankind, I do not really seem that cognizant of what other cultures the players have chosen as its too much on the background, and actually sometimes find myself to be a bit confused when it changes (e.g. identifying other players by culture is a continuous change). I have no ready solutions for this, but I think it would improve the core culture mechanic. So for example that the selection of a culture can be more visibly intertwined with the identifiers of other players (e.g. their colour, style, music).

Perhaps as an example, it could be that if I'm a red player, when I become the greeks, my banners/logo receives a blue/white border with greek design details, or when I am the romans it receives a gold/red border with roman details. That way I could get more of an impact of "hey, I'm fighting the Romans!". Rather than "I am fighting this red player, oh and now I see zooming out the map he seems to have chosen the Roman culture". Another suggestion, is making the background in the diplomacy menu's a lot more detailed/coloured per culture. (i.e. giving an Aztec player a jungle temple background, and a Greek player a amphitheatre background).

Hope this provides some inspiration!

An empire's current culture was much more up-front when Humankind was first released, and avatars/leaders took a back seat.  The community in general found it a bit confusing and harder to keep empires straight when the Harappans became the Huns became the Norsemen, so we have the current model of centering leaders for consistency (which I like).  However, I do think it would be neat if the empire icons changed to match our current culture.  All culture icons exist as options, but are chosen at start-time and locked in instead of changing dynamically with our culture.  I think having our icons change through the eras — or at least making this a game setting — would help with quick empire identification and immersion by keeping empire icons topical and keeping anachronistic icons (especially card suits and pistols) from representing empires.

Agreed, dynamic icons would do a lot for both culture readability and immersion, and there are already plenty of other ways to tell players apart.
