I think it would be cool if you could spend a significan amount of industry (similar to a smaller wonder) to dig a canal, each time you do it you lower the terrain by one level and mountains are not removeable. This way structures like the suez and panama canals would be doable in game. Probably unlocked during the industrial era?

You mean as a district or as a wonder ? I think that as a wonder it would make more sense, specially if it gave some sort of economic impact. However, I think that to integrate something like a canal would be difficult in this game.

Why do you think it would be difficult ?  The game already generate canal with it's procedural generation. That could be great to reduce maintenance cost of trade routes because you reduce the route to import from an empire to another.

Yes, I definitely agree with you, as a mean to reduce maintenance cost of trade routes it make sense. However I just don't see it as a district, but more as a infrastructure or wonder. Additionally I believe that a wonder would be the slightly "easier" way to implement this concept through a wonder like the Panama Canal. The benefits would for sure be economical and therefore I believe to be more suited for a wonder.

I think that if you want to implement a feature such as passing naval unites through a canal I find it way more harder to make that happen, although not impossible. However for that matter maybe to implement as a district would be better so that you can make more of them. You can definitely think of some additional infrastructure to make these districts generate more gold in more advanced eras but wouldn't that be maybe a bit too much overpowered ?

I love this idea of a canal, and for sure would like to see it added in the game. I just think it requires serious thinking and planning. But please, let us know of any ideas you may have!
