Hunnic Horde

22 Strength, 6 Movement, 3 range.

Nomad: Special unit that gathers Food through fighting and ransacking in order to multiply.

Free Riders: Can act a second time after attacking.

Resource Prerequisites: 1 Horse

Congratulations are certainly in order for accurately depicting how the ancient world must have felt upon making contact with Attila.

While I think it's cool that the Hunnic Horde can dominate all of the competition, I do have some gripes with it.

1. The Huns should not be able to effortlessly spam their hordes from the very start of the classic era. Antiquity was not dominated by Huns nor Scythians, their ascendance heralded its end.

The Hunnic Horde should not be produced by cities. The idea of a city importing horses through trade and training their citizens as Nomadic Horse Archers is silly. Hunnic Hordes should only be producable in Outposts/Ordus. I would even go so far as to suggest they should only be producable in Ordus placed next to a Strategic Resource of Horses. This would create an interesting dynamic where players will attempt to directly control Strategic Horse Resources on the map, to prevent their opponent from overwhelming them with undefeatable Hunnic Hordes. If the map does not provide any suitable Horse Strategic Resource then you can simply choose another military culture. Not every single playthrough has to be dominated by the same culture.

2. Horse Archers are not zerg swarms that rapidly replicate themselves through cannibalising the remains of fallen foes. A horse archer is an elite warrior, trained from birth in hunting and riding upon the open plains. The invincibility of the Huns was not based on their ability to replace their numbers out of thin air, it was in their ability to defeat endless foes while avoiding death themself. The Nomad ability to multiply itself should be removed.

3. If we're going to retain the Hunnic Horde as a supreme military elite for its era, which I approve of, we must afford it some weakness other than expense/difficulty to produce. My thought is that while the Nomadic Horse Archer should rule undefeated on open terrain, it should be hampered by city districts. The Huns did not sack Rome nor Constantinople after all. The counter to seeing your neighbour has chosen Huns as his culture should be to attach your outposts to your cities and secure them with defensive city districts. My suggestion is that the Nomad special ability be changed into: 'Deals 50% damage to units standing within a city district'. That way the Huns can still easily sweep up all of your outposts and poorly defended cities, without rolling over all of your fortified cities.

The reason I write this is that I fear the Hunnic Horde is about to be nerfed into just another regular unit, which I oppose. Retain the unique strength of the Hunnic Horde, while making it a larger investment to produce. Make it possible to counter pre-emptively by opponents going out of their way to control the Horse Strategic Resources, or reactively by sinking resources into fortifying their cities.

"Let's take the Hunnic Horde and make it really bad at actually winning wars and take forever to make!"

"Let's NOT fix the fact that it has two turns for every one turn other people have"

You know how you fix the Hunnic Horde? Make Free Rider just "Attacking does not end this unit's turn", no movement refresh, no double attacks, just "You can attack and then use any movement you had when attacking"

Boom, you have a strong but balanced unit that isn't instantly dominating anyone who doesn't massively outnumber them and have crazy speed.
