Hello everyone !

I come primarily because i have found some crucial, if not vital or... almost world-threatening error in the game :

the name of your satellite projects are... wrong. ((( ;゚Д゚)))

I mean, joke aside, it did confuse me and cause me to completely misplace my satellite launch pad in my first game and i don't see how anyone could get caught twice but the names are nevertheless wrong.

so the first satellite is called "Geosynchronous Satellite", yet it reveals an horizontal strip of tiles. and the second one is called "polar satellite" yet it reveals a few columns of tiles. both are incorrect, but since I'm not here to be overly pedantic, I'll just explain what is what. skip to the end for my recommended fix.

A geosynchronous orbit is an orbit that allows a satellite to stay over the same earth location all the time. in other words, if you could see it from the ground (because you ate a lot of carrots) it would appear still in the sky, never changing position.
Now from the satellite's perspective, it would always see the same part of the earth, and never ever be able to see the other side. Also because the earth is a sphere you could easily see what is really somewhat "under" the satellite, but you'd have trouble with everything that is close to the horizon because it would appear sideways. The game clearly discounts the north and south ice caps, so that just leaves the 15-30°(degrees)-ish east and west of the hemisphere unobservable. also, the geosynchronous orbit is much further away than the "low earth orbit" most real world satellites use, so it should not be the first project because it's harder
.

in practice what does this gibberish means ? well what you call the "Geosynchronous Satellite" should behave like what you have incorrectly called the "polar satellite" except it cannot possibly reveal 66% of the map. 50% if you're really generous, but realistically only 33~40%.

now the polar orbit satellite. as we just said, the effect you gave to that thing is in fact an approximation of what a geosynchronous satellite would be (god this word is hard to write). but then what should a polar orbit be ? well a polar orbit is an orbit that flies over the north and south poles. generally that's something you use to cartography an entire planet, except you do it pretty slowly. if the earth was still, you'd always fly over the same vertical strip of the earth, but because the earth is spinning at the same time, with each revolution you image a different vertical strip, that may or may not be just next to the previous one. Over time you will get a full picture of the planet. that would be pretty slow though, so for taking pictures of armies that's pretty crappy. in game terms that would at best reveal the map while leaving the fog of war, but that's pretty boring. you wouldn't want that in the game.

and because wee need to go full circle, what what the first satellite called then ? the one that reveals an horizontal strip of the map. well that's just a plain basic low earth orbit imaging satellite. launch it sideways (as opposed to a polar orbit being vertical) and here you go. actually no matter what you do a satellite has to orbit the center of the planet, so you should not be able to reveal an horizontal line at 40° latitude, it should make a sinewave but that seems like a chore to code so let's leave it as that.

EDIT: just for the record, i hope we're clear that the location of the launch pad actually should not restrict what your satellite can observe, this is solely a gameplay restriction. it anything, the further away from the equator you are, the more expensive launching your sattelites should be, but that's it. there is actually no zero to restrict the Geo sat. to being over its launch pad.

Recommended fix :
- Rename the first satellite to "Low earth orbit (or "LEO") observation satellite"

- Rename the second satellite to "Geosynchronous Satellite", and reduce the revealed portion of the map to anything between 50 and 33%

PS : an other fix if you like neat-but-unnecessary features would be to have the revealed area change each turn. (then you could call the polar orbit a polar orbit)

the polar orbit could shift a few hexes westward each turn and the LEO obs. sat. could oscillate north to south each turn. i think that would be cool, but annoying to code and potentially annoying gameplay-wise.
