Hi G2G Team,

Since the Metternich update, Humankind has been creating an unusual problem with my system. Before Metternich/Together We Rule, Humankind required between 20%-30% of my GPU at a normal clock speed and with an operating temperature peaking at about 65C. Since the update my utilization has risen over 70% with spikes to ~95%. The temperature will continue to rise until my fans are maxed and can no longer compensate for the heat. Before barely ten minutes of gameplay have elapsed I am forced to shut the game down because my GPU is approaching unsafe temperatures.

Frame capping Humankind to 60fps does not alleviate the problem. Frame capping it to 30fps somewhat helped, but GPU usage still extended well beyond the regular band that Humankind should be operating in on my system. Reducing the graphics quality from Fantastic to Beautiful has no impact but reducing them all the way to Simple and capping the frame rate to 30 reduced GPU usage to the normal amount I expect from the program. I hope you understand this is an unacceptable compromise to be able to play this game. I have included a collection of save files below. Turn 8 is about as far as I could play before I was risking harm to my hardware.

auto-save 5086.ctrauto-save 5087.ctrauto-save 5088.ctrNomadic Tribe Turn 6.ctrSumerians Turn 8.ctr

To reproduce this problem as best as I can tell you just need to launch the game, load a save, and let it run. No other games I run have been producing this problem (Even Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't come near working my GPU this hard). My system specifications are as follows:

Processor: Intel i7-10750 2.6-5.0 GHz

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super
Graphics Driver Version: 31:0:15:2647 (Updated October 27th, 2022)
Memory: 16GB GDDR4

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Thank you for the DLC, I am really quite genuinely looking forward to playing Together We Rule. Please let me know if there's anything further I can provide to help an investigation into the problem.

On my system the game uses 100% of my GPU and I get around 70 fps in a large map during classical era. Did I get a higher framerate before the update? I don't know.

I have a GTX 1080 ti. (slightly faster than yours, and it rarely goes over 70 degrees)

When you don't limit framerate you will either max out your CPU (the threads used by a game) or the GPU.

This is normal.

Your hardware should be capable at running at 100% without damaging itself.

From what you described your GPU is failing, maybe the fans need cleaning, or a blade is broken, maybe your case does not have adequate cooling.

Run some benchmarks, see if they also behave like that.

What does bother me about my GPU is that it starts chirping (coil whine) at that usage, and I don't even know when it started or if it always did that.

I wish you luck.

Hi, I have a similar problem with GTX 1060: 99% GPU activity with FPS now locked to 36, "Good" quality setting. I have all DLCs and the Metternich update installed, no mods. The game crashed several times, that's why I started checking things (file integrity with EGS, memory scan: no problems found). I saw no errors in the game diagnostics report. I had no such problems prior to the update.

I have the same issues. I'm unable to play the game.

Is there a way to revert back the update on steam ?

Hi again @viryx

Can you give us your player.log file as well please?

Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Player.Log can be found here:
    • PC: This folder is hidden by default. You will need to reveal hidden folders (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files-0320fe58-0117-fd59-6851-9b7f9840fdb2 ) then navigate to: Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\AMPLITUDE Studios\Humankind
    • Mac: This is hidden in the Libraries folder. You will need to do an internet search to find specific steps for your OS. Once the libraries folder is revealed, they are in user/library/logs/amplitude studios/humankind

Hi,

we are really sorry about this issue, we are working on it.

You can revert to the previous version by right clicking on the game in your steam library, choose "properties",  then "betas" and from the dropdown menu you choose "rollback".

Sorry again for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Hello,
This reminds me of an issue we had during one of our open devs. It was because graphics cards were rendering the game at 400 FPS because they could.

Could you enable the frame limiter and / or the vsync in the options to see if you can improve this situation ?

Thank you,

Just a tip for people like me who are unable to play and want to revert the changes.

The rollback option brings you before the new DLC update so your save game wont be compatible (and the DLC wont be activated at least it was not for me)

(by the way is it normal it brings you back so far ?)

but under betas if you select [update_preview] it should work fine with your saved games (at least i could keep going on my post DLC game)

Hi @Ryddari, @Ansive and @viryx,

Can you confirm if the problem is what Scar said? On our side we could see the same issue, but by switching on either the frame limiter or the vsync, that was fixed.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi @Cimiur ,

I loaded a savegame, alt-tabbed to see the task manager, and the game crashed.

Diagnostics_2.zip

That's my main problem: I had no ctd before, now I have it all the time. I found the GPU usage unusual, but maybe it always was unusual, I just had not noticed. (I think I always had vsync on.) But: the game had no performance and stability issues. One time I got some sort of memory error msg after the ctd, then I ran a memtest. No problems found.

I have a 120hz monitor. With the settings I use at 1080p I get 50-80 fps in the early game with my 1080 ti.

If I limit the game to 60fps the usage goes down from 99% to 70-90% when hitting the 60 fps limit.

So it looks normal behavior to me, just really hard on the GPU. I would say the graphics are not optimized (in steam page is says recommended is 1060 GTX, unclear for what settings).

Sadly I don't remember if the game was always this hard on the graphics. Maybe it was running at a higher FPS, but I'm sure I wasn't getting 120fps in the later game.

Note: for those experiencing crashes, make sure your virtual memory isn't running out (normally windows auto adjusts the size).

I foolishly set the pagefile size to manual and too low in the past and I was getting Civ and Humankind to crash.

It's the Committed stat in Task Manager-Performance-Memory. I was reaching 24/24GB and getting crashes.

I'll post my performance. Maybe it can be confirmed if the fps looks normal.

Hi, thanks again for your replies.

Regarding the stability issues, we think that we identified the problem and we'll deliver a patch for that as soon as possible.

Regarding the FPS, that behaviour is expected. Unfortunately, the game is a bit heavy on the GPU. If you see that it's too taxing for your card try to limit it to 60fps like Ansive said.

Sorry again for the inconvenience and thank you very much for all your help!
