Battle: The power of doing nothing

Hello,

I want the AI to realize that doing nothing is often the best option. When I play in the neolithic era I find some high-ground / rivers and fortify. This lets me beat stronger enemies, usually, I can win a battle by fortifying twice and then attack when fighting a deer. That is fine and predictable behavior against animals. I do however see this exact same thing against player AIs in many situations. This especially bothers me if they are defending the flag and attack me uphill getting large negative modifiers and throwing away units. They should only in special cases have an interest in taking a bad trade when they are defending the flag.

I thought I could make a small mod for this but this seems difficult as there are a limited amount of heuristics and they don't seem to take into account if it's a good or bad trade. I think there should be a heuristic that says attack if a good trade is possible. If I'm mistaken that the "Attack" heuristic takes this into account, not only finds the best place to attack but also decides if it should attack, then I believe it should be tuned to attack less often.

Hi Thrommath,
Thank you for that feedback. If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you share a save where the AI have done that (so we can replicate it)

so far every time I've gotten into  a fight in neolithic, whether I was attacked or the ai attacked, all they did was defend. Every time on every unit. I was actually getting tired of it. Sometimes later era battles feel that way too.

@Daarkarr0w , or another Dev, what steps do we take to "share a save" with you in a post here on G2G?  I'm not familiar with how that's done.

There is no special steps to do. You can just drop it here. They are specially importat in the case of the AI so our team can use them (to reproduce behaviours etc).
Here is where you can find th save files:

PC: \Users\[username]\Documents\Humankind\Save Files

Mac: This is hidden in the Libraries folder. You will need to do an internet search to find specific steps for your OS. Once the libraries folder is revealed, they are in /library/ application support/humankind/Save Files
