AI Doesn't Build Armies After More Than 20 Turns At War

AI Builds Far too Few Armies When At War

I was watching a live stream of a Humankind game just yesterday, played at Normal Speed, on Humankind difficulty.  The streamer began a war while in the Early Modern era, simultaneously with 3 AI opponents, two of which were in the Contemporary era; both of which rivaled or exceeded him in Fame.  To be clear, this human player had 3 simultaneous war opponents, on the same continent, on AI difficulty, while he was in the early part of the Early Modern era.

AIs 1 and 2 below were in the Contemporary era when war began, and had a clear technological advantage over the human player.

AI 1:  Built 12 ships, rather than land units, on a world that was 70% land.  Did build land units consistently once war began, adding to a half dozen already built, but was defeated by the human player.

AI 2:  After more than 20 turns in a War state, while the human player attacked AI 1, AI 2 did not launch a single attack on any players.  This AI had the "Rusher" trait.  After the human player wiped out AI 1, and finally did attack AI 2, the nearest city owned by AI2  was defended by only "peasants", or city militia, and one military unit.  Later attacks, all initiated by the human player, revealed maybe 12 Redcoat military units.  This AI had at least two planes, but across 20+ turns never built more, and never attacked with planes.

AI 3:  Was in the Industrial era when war began, and was defeated easily after AI 1 and 2 were defeated.

Well they hardly need to because if a war lasts that long, you'll be at 10 war support while the AI is still at 100 no matter how many battles you win.

I don't know if the new patch fixes this or not but it sure does feel like it. Hopefully it did get fixed.

Hi Yutterh,

Thank you for your feedbacks. The situation you're describing is a couple of months old, so things may have changed since then. However, I think I see two problems we haven't addressed yet:

- We did notice that the AI tends to build too many naval armies. We do have some leads to fix that but didn't get the time to implement and test it just yet

- We fixed a couple of things since then, regarding the AI reactivity to war (especially regarding vassalage) and the way the AI would build its armies. All these changes could have partially fixed the experience you describe. Recently, we have reworked the plane management to optimize the AI's resources (build less airfields and air forces but use them better), that should be in an upcoming update as well. I would need to see the situation for myself to give you more information.

Cheers,

Alex.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Alex and all the other Devs who occasionally take a few minutes to reply to forum questions and suggestions. It's refreshing whenever we see a Dev chime in, and offer an update, or context, or share what they or the Dev team thinks about a topic or issue.

Well, you're welcome! Thank you for taking the time to send us your thoughts :) Most of us have been working on this game for years, it's nice to exchange with you folks about it.
