I like the inclusion of changing the name of your religion, but besides the name and the look of the religious district nothing major changes. I think that based on what religion you choose you get a different preset of choices for your upgrades.
This change would definitely balance religion. It is incredibly annoying when one person gets to the "respect the sea's bounty" tenet or the "meditate often" tenet before you do. That person, for the rest of the game, has +2 combat strength on every unit and will most likely get the other tenets first with the massive boost in food production from the sea's bounty. If there were multiple trees to go down it may counteract this sort of broken system.
