I was thinking that the Aquatic races will need a replacement for the default Iron equipment that other races start with. Obviously, humanoids that live underwater most of their lives can't possibly be wearing Iron underwater (Rust makes it impossible etc...). So the first thing we need to think about (besides unique resources) is the Standard/default equipment material that aquatic races will start with, to replace Iron. Pearl and Coral material are obvious choices, especially as replacements for Iron and Glassteel. smiley: approval

But if we want something with more "science-like" sound to it, here are some names taken from real life materials:

1- Ammolite: In real life, organic gemstones formed from the fossilized shells of Ammonites (which are themselves mad of Aragonite). In Endless Legend, we could say that it was formed from the fossilized shells of giant extinct molluscs (specify fantasy name?).

2- Nacrome: Based on Nacre, which is the origin point of pearl formation (also made of Aragonite). In Endless Legend, the colonies of Dust-infused Microbialites are cultivated and harvested to produce this "bright-blue" mineral or something like that...

3- Calchiore: Based on Calcium Carbonate and Conchiolin and the word "ore" meaning the rocky deposit of a mineral. Pearls themselves are almost 100% composed of Calcium Carbonate. Conchiolin is the second most abundant substance in pearls.

The ore itself grows from a Plant-Oyster hybrid lifeform called (*insert name here*).

These are the first examples that come to my mind. Not sure if the devs decide to use the same material of land factions for the aquatic factions... to save time and effort

I like all three examples, although I think I'd prefer if they just added Ammolite Armor and -Weapons to the game as a new material, perhaps alongside Dolomite (Marble) for the Cult of the Eternals End smiley: wink

If you wanted a distinctive material associated with water factions you could use bones of huge sea-going creatures that a hypothetical water faction may hunt.

Now, I'm really interested in seeing your Water Faction brought to life in the game (the Naga would be sooo awesome if implemented), but I just got to wondering; will there be any kind of Strategic- or Luxury Resource specific to the oceans?

I can totally see Pearls or Exotic Shoals being Luxury Resources that are exclusively found in the oceans or along the coasts of landmasses, and could be used for a Dust smiley: dust and Science smiley: science boost, or a plain Approval smiley: approval boost respectively.

Besides, almost all the armies in this game has some sort of Gear type associated with it (Broken Lords & Palladian, Roving Clans & Adamantian, Ardent Mages & Hyperium; the Cult of the Eternal End being the only exception), so what could be a cool idea for an ocean dwelling race? I've seen some cool ideas for Coral armor on the interwebs, but that might be a bit too obvious. Besides, what would it be called? Coralite?

Pearls:

Exotic Shoals:

Nasarog suggested winter storms in the naval warfare thread, so why not add those to this thread? It doesn't have to be just during winter either. There could be hurricanes, waterspouts, gales, ice that covers coastal water in winter, tsunamis, and many, many more. Oceans could become very divers terrain-wise compared to just deep and shallow ocean.

I think it is a great idea to have ocean terrain with unique features such as slower movement speed of ships or reduced Ranged attacks etc.. just like the examples you mentioned and more like Maelstroms, Hurricanes and similar stuff.

Unfortunately, we still don't know if there will be naval combat or not, so we can't be sure how these unique terrain effects should be applied. Most likely, they will simply affect movement speed? smiley: confused

Would there be strategic resource deposits underwater? And if so, would the tech for it be the same as land-based extractors or different? Also, both your anomalies and tiles seem to have multiple purposes, you should have some high concentration tiles of only one FIDSI.

Yes, all resources will also be found in Ocean regions, whether on single tile islands or underwater equivalents. Would not be balanced otherwise...

Most land anomalies indeed have multi-purpose, giving major amount of one FIDSI but small amount of another FIDSI. Very few of them have exclusive yields such as Black Earth giving only Food.

Then again, my suggestions are open to any sort of changes. I would definitely want to see more variety and/or efficient selections, as suggested by other players on this thread. smiley: approval
