Pretty good evidence that they might be a major faction, especially since so far only major factions have access to building tech, although it would be really cool if assimilating minor factions would allow you to build new buildings that you normally wouldn't have access to

I suppose I can understand why you would want to redo ES1 after creating such a masterpiece as Endless Legend. But I dont see a reason why you cant make ES2 without being consistent with EL and ES1.

And why call it ES2? If its not a sequel...or a prequel.

Or why not just do a sequel if you want to use completely new races.

This is great to hear, of course. It's excellent to know that the worlds and the lore are appreciated.

But as designers, when we decided to do ES2 we didn't want to just do an extension or a clone -- that's one of the reasons we did two other games before we started another Endless Space; we wanted more ideas and more practice and more experience. But once we decided we were ready, we had to face the question of prequel vs sequel and where the game fits in the universe.

We finally figured that it should be a parallel reboot of the ES1 universe. We didn't want to just re-use all the same factions, because that would be creatively uninteresting (plus the reviews and critics would slaughter us). On the other hand, we didn't want to make 8 entirely new races, because then all the players from ES1 wouldn't feel any relation to the universe. Then, of course, came all the internal debates about which ones we could keep and which ones we wouldn't, and obviously there was a lot of trouble with that because everybody has their own favorites. Mine were the Sophons and the Hissho, so I was happy that one made a comeback but unhappy that the other ended up as a minor race. But it's a debate and a discussion and no one person gets to have everything their way (except maybe SpaceTroll, and he's pretty cool about not being a dictator  ).

But since ES1 didn't really have any kind of linear story -- AkatsukiLeader13 is spot on with that comment -- there was really no plot to continue. And the other reason we couldn't do a sequel is because we already took the science tree up to an insane level of virtualized magical space civilization -- how do you go on from there?? So again we thought that a reboot, a parallel telling, another view of the same multiverse would be the way to do it. No matter what way we ended up doing it there would be risks, and we're just hoping that the path we finally took turns out to be a good one.

That's the long answer :)

4X games can't really have sequels in the purest sense, unless you change drastically the "age" or setting of the previous one. From civ to alpha centaurai, or maybe from a mordern age 4X  to a post apocalyptic game ? :D

I kinda feel for the Hissho, though I can imagine thatn from a scopê view point something like an interplanetary locust swarm ala cravers is deeper than the rank and file militarists. What's more the Hissho didn't strike me as "imperial" which was a bit weird when you think about it. As a minor factions they me a hassle for budding empires, won't they ? I do hope some minor factions will be quite difficult to subjugate/ally with.

I hope you guys don't do this for Endless Legend 2 if you guys decide to do that. Mostly because I was looking forward to a similar tale on a planet other than Auriga or the story of the necrophages reawakening (although I feel they are going to jump straight out of Auriga as a space faring faction). There is plenty of room to retell the story of Endless Space, but I don't see a similar opportunity in Endless Legend.

Remember that the reason they are redoing Endless Space is because they feel that they are now capable of creating a worthy successor. Mainly because Endless Space was their first game, and holds a place as their first real project.

Even if it's possible they aren't quite projecting yet into post ES2 projets, maybe they want to explore another universe entirely ?

God I hope Vaulters can be in this one, they're a big faction and they're exist in all Endless and I want to know the end of their story D:

Furthermore, the Vaulter are the kind of race who take a lot in the face and can stand again and go , I don't think vodyani can kill all of them (but I afraid a little, Zolya clan are the main clan in the vaulter faction, maybe they're assimilated and the rest flee)

But as a Minor or a Major Race, Eh I don't know but hell I really hope they are (Because everybody love Space Geek Viking ! o.o)

RE-reading GDDs in Galaxy and exploration found this:

People do see a lot of potential in teleportation through anomalies/black holes, as it could shake up early game and exploration. (Including Vaulter built warp-gate talk). Especially mentioned is teleporting to ‘unconnected systems’ – which people find interest.

Not sure if means anything, as looks like ES1 concept of Vaulters, but may be.

Well the thing is it's not like ES1 had a concrete story going on that ES2 could continue.  It's more like the Sid Meier's Civ series, where ther are sequels but they aren't sequels that are advancing a story or otherwise a continuation of the Civ game before it.

The only constant from ES1 to ES2 is the Endless, Dust and their backstory.  The only why ES2 could be a prequel is if it was set in the time when the Endless were first setting out into space.  There can't be a sequel to ES1's story because there are countless stories.  Everytime a player starts a game, a new ES1 story is being told.  Further all the Factions start off with just their homeworld.  Shouldn't there be factions that stand as glorious galactic empires at this moment?

ES2 is a sequel in the same vein as the Civ series, where they have taken lessons learned from previous titles and experimenting with new things to create a new entry in the series.

Let's hope that Vaulters are here as a major faction. I really liked their design in ES (though it was a remodel of UE which was nice too) and in EL they are simply the only race that I enjoy playing (a race of scientists that came from somewhere else , but do not remember that, isn't it beautiful?). And now I'm looking forward to see them and their ships in a more mature design . So, I hope that they are here and they shall soon thrive under my control. Also I want more of their lore. I enjoyed it much in EL.

Maybe, but it's based on the assumption that warp gates are still Vaulter specific tech in ES2. They could have just made it available to everyone through the tech tree.

Or that the Vaulters are a Minor Faction. Or that they are mentioned in Lore fluff but not much else, like the Deuyivans in ES1.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy if they were the human faction in ES2 instead of *spits* ... the UE.

I'm just rather reserved, because we don't have anything to go on other than speculation at this point.

They really don't rub me the right way. They feel like a special group, like the academy, whereas the UE has the feeling of a larger encompassing stellar faction. Maybe it won't keep it's previous form, and you could argue that humans may adopt very different form of civilisation - but so may do most of the other species. The mavros for instance are a peek at what a more amoral and warlike Sophon civ could have been like.

Yeah.I feel the Vaulters and Pilgrims are better suited to minor faction in the lore while the UE is a proper galactic empire.

It'd work better for me at least if it was the Mezari.   The civilization the Vaulters spawned from.

We know so little about them that they could be a galactic empire.

It wouldn't work chronologically, as the Mezari fell before Auriga became uninhabitable.

I thought about it. That looks nice. They are not just another version of the Vaulters but their ancestors. Would like to find out more about them. Also their design is great

Though only a small group of the Mezari fell at all.   There's nothing preventing their non-Vaulter descendants from being a thing.

Wait, you mean that the original civilization that sent "Success" on Auriga fell? Where did you get that from?

We know. It's something that was acknowledged in ES1 as well and we're fine with it.

There were a few things that went against established lore for gameplay/balance reasons. For example, Birblasa (the Amoeba's homeworld) was described as a Swamp planet, but because that type did not exist in the game, they started on an Ocean world.

I really loved the Amoeba in ES1. Their lore and design made them stand out among the other factions.

I'm really going to miss them and the Automatons.

Well yeah, technically all the races in ES1 are still out there somewhere in the galaxy. This little mention doesn't necessarily confirm the Vaulters as a playable race though.

Didn't say they were going to be a playable race, in fact, I suspect they'll wind up being a minor race. Most likely Scientist Technologists or Scientist Scavengers (Although it would be really cool from a lore perspective if they have JUST left Auriga in Endless Legend and they're actually Scientist Primitives )

Also, keep in mind that the Lumeris were also first hinted at in a similar way, through the bio description of the hero Nelly "Shaken" Sira Ninpere. I highly doubt that a previously existing faction that's being referenced in this manner WON'T be showing up in some capacity.

True. I forgot about the Lumeris mention in Nelly's bio.

That does open up the possibility of the Vaulters being added to the game at some point, but who knows...

TBH, I'm hoping some of the races in ES1 make it as major factions.

It would simply be weird if they didn't.

Something as major a force as the UE or Vaulters would seem out of place as "minor" factions in gameplay (even if not in lore).

Personally, hoping for the Automatons and Amoeba to be major factions, but admittedly they are not so... "major". :(

Actually, there are factions in ES1 that have been active in the galaxy are are not by definition, Minor Races who have colonies only in their home system. The Amoeba, Sowers, UE, Sophons  don't really make sense as Minor Races because they have travelled outside their home systems.

When his system was taken by a Vodyani Ark ship and his people assimilated

Or the vaulters are gone. Assimilated by the Vodyani.

Btw. I really like the way Amplitude doesn't care about too much consistency in the story line between games.

I'm pretty sure the Vaulters are fine and dandy, the Vodyani probably assimilated a small colony.

And since ES2 is technically a reboot of the universe, some of the things in ES1 get carried over, some don't.

Actually, that's a possibility I had not considered. In the previous faction reveal, the Lumeris were called out by name, while that was not the case here. That being said, I do hope the Vaulters appear in some capacity, but I still think it's more likely they'll show up as a minor faction instead of a major one.

One thing to consider is that so far the only two returning major factions we've seen were the very first two that were announced. Not saying that we won't potentially see more in the future, but I think it's a stronger possibility that when we finally see the major human faction, it's going to be a brand new faction that uses a mixture of gameplay elements we've seen from the previous games, much like the Vodyani and Lumeris.

Not much, but I've bold (and enlarged) the appropriate text that seems to hint that the Vaulters exist in some form in Endless Space 2

NAME: Varb St Zouieina
FACTION: Vodyani
CLASS: Admiral
POLITICAL PARTY: Religious

LORE: If pressed to respond, Varb would indicate that his life began as a hydroponic farmer on a space station, a member of the Zolya Clan and a happy husband and father. When his system was taken by a Vodyani Ark ship and his people assimilated, Varb was one of the few whose spirits were deemed worthy to ascend to the gift of Vodyani citizenship. As mortal body was replaced by energy and Varb donned his Cloth and became a member of the Protectorate, little remained of the anger at his family's death and his own transformation. As a soldier of the Vodyani, Varb came to execute his duties professionally and faithfully. His attitude changed forever when he touched a ruin on a barren world, and came into unprepared contact with the living spirit of Zouieina. This Virtual, dying slowly in an underpowered site, was glad to find redemption and life as a Vodyani saint. While Varb felt a trace of amusement from Zouieina at the notion, the powers that his Cloth assumed from the spirit and the abilities that he gained were exceptional. Unhappily, Zouieina awoke within Varb memories of a lost family and of other ways that a people might choose to live. Torn but triumphant, overtly efficient but silently in turmoil, Varb is a hero who is not sure where he will stand when Great Penance comes.

I don't know about the Automatons, but I think there's still a good chance the Amoeba will make it in. We still need an ecologist faction. Granted, that could be a completely new one, but personally I am betting on a 50/50 split between old and new factions. It leaves more room to be surprised in expansions.

Things is, the Amoeba  fit the Pacifist/Diplomat theme more than the Ecologist one, which other ES1 factions like the Automatons would fit better.

Hopefully the Harmony make it in as a major faction (maybe an expansion later like Disharmony) with some redesigned ships.  Their no dust/corrupt dust playstyle was unique and one of my favorites.  In ES2 I would assume they would have profound contributions to a population focused game with their interactions with other factions causing dust intolerance in the population 'climate'.  They also make for a nice aesthetic and lore in the game having a real presence in all three games and having a nice alien quality.

True. There is no way that a faction like the Harmony who has been active since the dawn of time not make an appearance in this game. Lore wise, they are still stuck in this galaxy thanks to Dust.

This is exactly what I mean. Some things don't make sense. Like a Broken Lord in Dungeon of the Endless. On the other hand, why bother? I like it.

Neil Gaiman once said "Life will always be stranger than fiction. Because fiction has to be convincing." It seems to me Amplitude found a very good balance here.

And I hope the vaulters make it to the game.

Amen to that. Every time I see a shooting star I wish for the Harmony in ES 2 (as a MAJOR playable faction!)
out of their unique playstyle and more xenoish appearance.

Vaulters would be just another humanoid race (the Lumeris are very humanoid too imho) and I think the Vodyani are already a great substitution for them.

I dont know man.

The problem when you create such a beautiful lore rich world, you kind of create fans.

I love the lore of the Endless series. Might be the only reason I cant get into other 4x games.

What if Blizzard stopped using Orcs in their Warcraft games?

I suppose I can understand why you would want to redo ES1 after creating such a masterpiece as Endless Legend. But I dont see a reason why you cant make ES2 without being consistent with EL and ES1.

And why call it ES2? If its not a sequel...or a prequel.

Or why not just do a sequel if you want to use completely new races.

Because a clone of the original with a handful of improvements is just that. A CLONE.
