ENDLESS™ Space 2 is turn-based 4X space-strategy that launches players into the space colonization age of different civilizations within the ENDLESS™ Universe. Your Vision. Their Future.
... Hell, it's [never] too early to talk about a successor to Endless Legend!
I fixed your typo! <3
Although I agree, I’d rather see a completely new game in the Endless universe next. Maybe something different, as Dungeons of the Endless was, but still connected to all the other games.
Or some weird game set in Coroz, the original Riftborn universe, with its vastly different laws of physics. Now that would be quite something …
Honestly, I'd be fine if a successor never came. There are still people today who prefer Masters of Orion 2 and have plumbed the depths of that game's metagame. Endless Space 2 and Endless Legend are two "if I was trapped on a desert island" type games that would take many years to fully suss out, I think.
So whatever Amplitude feels up to making, I'm on board. They've already given us lots.
I can't comment about future plans without having body parts involuntarily removed. But what I *can* say is that we got into this thing out of passion, not to get rich, and as long as we can keep the lights on and the salaries paid we want to keep doing it.
It's true that SEGA owns us now, and they technically call the shots, but the have been unbelievably hands-off and cool about letting us make the contents and set the schedules that we want. Of course, if we start losing money hand over fist that will probably change, but for the moment we're in a good place.
As far as sequels go, we really like to take our time between them. We made ES1 and learned a lot. Then we made EL, and learned a ton more. ES2 is the amalgam of everything we learned before that, so there is no way we could go straight to an ES3--we really haven't learned enough new stuff to make it a true "3" rather than a "2.5".
So stay cool and have faith. We'll keep doing this as long as we can :)
That's amazing to hear! It really shows that ES2 and the previous games is run by passion and love for the game/universe rather than people "working". A lot of excitement can be felt when you announce new things coming, I noticed that much in closed beta participation!
It'll be very interesting and a fun ride to see what sort of stuff will be learned from this game for a possible sequel, and what can be improved that isn't already being improved as this game progresses. And I hope other people feel the same way so you can keep doing your own thing without anyone shaking their wallets in worry!

Or a game set in the Endless Period, I'd love to see the Dust Wars and the conflict with Harmony and/or the Lost. The amount of new content and ships would be amazing and it could bring back factions like the Hissho, Harmony, Automatons and early human empires akin to the Mezari. + Endless ships are probs beautiful, like some forerunner level shit
+1
We've went forwards in terms of the passage of time with Endless Space, now to go back before DoTE/EL B)
Yeee, time for the Riftborn to take us back in time

That would be cool, could be a really epic story driven game, but I don't think it could be a 4X. I can't imagine building up an empire from the start if I'm supposed to be the Endless - It should be a multi-system/multi galaxy-spanning conflict with almost limitless power at the fingertips of both sides.
So I have no idea what the game would be really, I just like the setting.
True, but even in Endless Space some of the empires already are galaxy spanning. The Vodyani for example, have already been shipborn for hundreds and hundreds of years and have enslaved dozens of diffeent species, and it's hinted that the UE are suppose to already have colonies elsewhere (if you read Dmitri Lenko's background and look at the UE Main quest, since Traitors Reach is a far flung planet)
So I don't think it would be problamatic to start off each Endless Faction (Virtual, Concrete, etc) and maybe the Harmony and Lost in a similar fashion.

Hello i am coming from future. ES3 was released in 2034, it worked well, way to well i would say. It became so popular that some dystopic states decided to use it as a virtual official country (you cant imagine the amount of pun about the endless virtuals btw). It was good at the beginning, but the virtual country of Sims 7 declared war on us and tryed to murder all of us by drowning us in swimming-pools (by removing ladders) or removing our doors to the kitchen. It created a terrible virtual mondial war and the earth is about to be destroyed.
So i am coming back to the past to tell to amplitude dev to never release endless space 3. Make Endless Legend 2, to save the fate of the humanity.

Amplitude is JUST getting started with ES 2. Considering all the possibilities that can be added to the current game (and Amplitude's history as a developer), why would anyone even think of a sequel at this point?
So I was wondering how well the game did and if we can expect a successor based on that.
What I was able to find out about the game was that it sold about 300k on steam before the sale, and some more 30k in the sale according to steamspy.
Don't know if it sold on the shelf or retail, GOG as well, and how much.
Anyone know more?
Will Sega keep publishing the brand? 4x space games are very niche, so I don't have the best gut feeling about this.
Or is Amplitude the owner of the IP? And they could try it with another publisher?
Any info on that topic overall?
It is way too early to talk about a successor to Endless Space 2 at this stage, as we're far from done with the game. Hell, it's too early to talk about a successor to Endless Legend!
Amplitude is a SEGA-owned studio so it's not a question of whether they'll publish our next game, it's a question of when will we be talking about it with you guys?
tl;dr: totally hinted at things coming for ES2, oh my I wonder if there is a big anniversary date coming up or something??
I'd still like to play ES2 for the next couple of years and see it upgraded/extented. I'd happily pay for that, too. Altough 6x15$ DLCs would be too much for me.
Same here. Just to support 4x space and amplitude I would buy all DLC they release. Totally onboard about being passionate about your product. The bigger the team, however, the harder it gets. Though there was a lack of good quality 4x out there, with depth and soul. I felt Amplitude (and to be fair, Wargaming with MOO too, it's just more "casual") filled that gap.
DLC are a good way to prolong the lifecycle of a game while keeping it profitable, if things work out. I never got why some ppl hate it so much.
I think I answered the question in a respectful way; especially as a fellow game player/fan.
To me, a topic like this kind of borders a little bit on impolite.
And, as Kray said, I really do think that the best thing about Amplitude is their soul. I know it seems ephemeral (and subjective), but you see it in their design, in their art, in the music--FlyByNo is amazing!--and especially in how much attention and accessibility they offer.
No one is perfect, but I'm a pretty big fan of the company. I'm grateful for them.

I think ES3 at this time wouldn't be much of a difference. It wouldn't bring much new to the table. And tbh, I really hate this Civilization like incremental "updates" which cost full price just to keep the company going. I seriously hope that Amplitude won't go that godawful Sid Meier way.
I'm still unhappy how they left Beyond Earth and moved onto Civ VI. I still don't see a reason to buy or even play VI. Their DLC/price politics are just trashy. Firaxis lacks soul - and as a businessman I can say, that it definitely shows that this company purely is about business. They act kinda driven to generate and milk their Cash Cows which is a bit sad to watch. (from a pure business pov - it's understandable though)
Anyway, I'd be happy to support Amplitude if they think about creating some meaningful DLCs which would enhance ES2. However, when lifecycles of computer games adapt and resemble the I-phone at some point, then I'm out. (exaggerated)
I just don't dig these big industrialized teams with no soul which are so driven. Tells much when you get their GOTY with all DLCs for 10 bucks after a couple of years because they just moved on. It's like they don't take pride in their work. From the business kinda view, they take what they can get and they have the market shares. But their label doesn't stand for innovation and quality anymore. Just a big cash grabber (think Starships).
Bah, I just can't stand Studios which abandon their projects so easily and move on.
Well, I hope Mr. Meier sleeps well at night. If I were him, I'd feel cheap. /rant
Haha true true, but Sega hasn't canceled CA's Total War yet (and though, sadly, I've played those more than the Endless series yet they're far behind Amplitudes games in quality and literally everything else) so I think their definition of reasonable is reasonable for now
And yeah ! Can't wait to see what else they come out with !
13,2mil gross. Steam takes 30%. Just saying. Also, SEGA... They bought Aamplitude, so they call the shots. Big publisher. They have their own definitions of whats reasonable :)
Let's say I just hope you are right, I want to play a sequel! :)
I'm not sure on this, but I did read somewhere that Sega did own the IP, but you may want to message one of the DEVs about it if you really want to know.
However, I do know that as long as Amplitude continues making the great (and successful) games that it has, there would be no reason for Sega to not continue publishing the brand.
I'm sure that any publisher would be happy to take Amplitude under their wing if things didn't work out with Sega though. I mean their games have been spot on and award-winning which is just the kind of game a publisher wants to, well, publish.
Well assuming that each of the 330,000 people that bought the game on steam only bought the standard edition, they stand to make about $13.2mil. But that isn't counting anyone who originally bought or upgraded to the Digital Deluxe (which can be assumed; is quite a few) which could jump the number another million or two.
Also, did you account for people who bought the game during Early Access b/c that could also increase the amount of money they've made from the game so far ?
The game did sell in stores/retailers and on other websites for prices that varied from $20-$50 which means there was a lot of money made away from Steam.
And going on Lilyophelias point, Amplitude has done well for itself in the past, and there are no signs of them slowing down (it looks as if they're just getting started with the Endless Universe) + there'll be 4-6 DLC packages that could go from $10-15 + 1-3 other ones that are about $1-5 so it which makes the games total cost roughly range from $39.99-$80 (?)
So funding-wise
They seem to be on track to making a successor game, whether or not this game will be tied to the Endless Universe is a different matter altogether though.
Well, I didn't really question their capability nor their dedication to the product. I was just wondering how financially reasonable and viable it is. In the end, that is a decisive factor for any successor. 300k break even is what I would expect for them at least. Maybe 400k. So looking at the sales from gamespy, I think the game covered the cost and made a little bit of profit. But that's just total guesswork here based on some experience I have in the field.
There are many talented developerse out there that make good games and polish them well, but it does not automatically mean that they are a financial success.
Amplitude is pretty amazing, and I'm sure they have a pretty good future ahead of them.
With many games--especially 4x games, which can be considered more niche--a lot has to do with the game's budget and how many units they need to sell to make a profit. It's apples and oranges between games.
ES2 is built on successive iterations of the same/similiar engine, and you can expect each new game to be even better. They have also been phenomenal about polishing their game, and if the past is a prediction of the future, we're looking at a library of interesting--super reasonably priced--expansion DLC that will flesh out this game even more.
Endless Legend at launch is very different from EL after Tempest (which was 5+ Expansions in).
I can only speak from my experience with Amplitude: they've always exceeded my hopes; and completely devastated my expectations!
So yeah, my guess is that we're going to get several ES2 expansions; and then maybe they'll revisit Endless Legend (or try out another game), before they eventually come back to another Endless Space title even further down the line.
